Hawaiian Culture Series
Join us for an informative and interesting "talk story" with respected Nelson Makua. Born and raised in Kailua, 'Oahu, he moved to the Big Island in 1975, where he resides in the Puna District, home of the original Makua 'ohana. "My ancestors were part of the migrations from Tahiti to Hawaii and they settled in the Kalapana area in the district of Puna. For me moving to Puna felt like coming home."
About Nelson Makua

Nelson has been the director of the Merrie Monarch Invitational Hawaiian Arts Fair since 2004. Since then he has transformed it into one of Hawai'i's premiere events featuring most of Hawai'i's master artisans and producers of Hawaiian arts and crafts. He and his son Kainoa are also producers of the Nä Mäkua Invitational Christmas Gift Fair which they started in 2008 setting the same high standards.
He is also the director of The Moku O Keawe Hula Festival's Market Place held in Waikoloa every November and hosts a group of Native Hawaiian artists and producers called Hui Ike Ku'una at the Made In Hawaii Festival in Honolulu annually.
