Five nights at Kalani and one night in Kona allow us to cover the breadth of this inspiring island.

Monday: A day to unwind and take in all that Kalani has to offer – from our renowned yoga classes held in breathtaking studios, to an optional wellness treatment. Excursions will be made available to the nearby tidal pools for snorkeling, and the black sand, clothing-optional Kehena beach, where wild spinner dolphins often play.

Tuesday: Experience the stunning beauty of the active volcanoes and lava flows onVolcanoes National Park this memorable day of adventure! Visit the enchanting Volcanoes National Park, where we will visit the most active crater in the world, walk through an extinct lava tube, learn about the monitoring of the volcanic activity, enjoy a spectacular hike. We will then descend to Kalapana where the Pu’u O’o lava flow often crashes right into the ocean, creating spectacular sunset viewing.

Wednesday: Today we will take a relaxing day trip to the southernmost point in the United States, aptly named South Point. Gazing from here, the closest landfall is Antarctica, 7,500 miles away. We will then take an invigorating hike to the anomaly known as Green Sand Beach, a fascinating and breathtaking spot worth the hike down the cliff. On the way back to Kalani, we will make a stop at Punalu’u, the largest black sand beach in Hawaii and home for the Hawaiian Honu (Green Sea Turtle).

Green Sand Beach - Big IslandThursday: Today we visit one of the most beautiful spots in all of Hawai’i, the Waipi’o Valley. Called the “Valley of Kings,” it was the capital and permanent residence of many early Hawaiian kings up until the time of King ‘Umi. Several large waterfalls fall into the valley to feed the river which flows from the foot of the largest falls at the back of the valley out to the ocean. After some time in the valley, we will return to Hilo, where we will enjoy a waterfall swim or a dip in Hilo Bay. In the late afternoon we will ascend Mauna Kea, a Hawaiian sacred sight and host to international astronomy projects. After sunset on the summit, we will marvel at the incredible nighttime sky through our eyes and locals’ telescopes. We finish this fantastically full day by driving to Kona, where we will spend the night.

Friday: Begin the day with a spectacular kayak adventure across Kealakekua Bay, where whales and dolphins are frequently spotted. Arrive at the Captain Cook monument, home to one of the most spectacular snorkeling spots in Hawaii. Continue through coffee plantations and learn about the sugar cane trade on your way to the spectacular white sand beaches and perfect weather this side of the island is famous for. We finish the day with a feast for the senses as we cross the Saddle Road between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, passing through a different ecosystem every 10-15 minutes on our way back to a final evening at Kalani.

Saturday: Start the day with an optional trip to the Seaview Community Farmer’s Market, or a yoga class, and one last visit to Kehena black sand beach. After lunch, we will say our goodbyes, and you will then be transferred to Hilo airport – unless, of course, you decide to stay with us longer!

Note that this itinerary is subject to change based on weather and volcano conditions. Nature moves by her own rhythms - especially here on the Big Island!
