Puna Music Festival 2012

May 19, 2012 - May 28, 2012

Hawaii Music Festival LogoCome celebrate Puna and enjoy local music at the Puna Music Festival, presented by KAPA FM, home of Hawai`i's music. With four major concerts and a schedule full of workshops and special gatherings, this ten-day community event is sure to be fun for all ages.

This year's festival kicks off on Saturday, May 19th with an intimate concert featuring Kuana Torres Kahele, who has been nominated for 10 Na Hoku Hanohano awards this year.  Kuana gained critical acclaim for reviving Hawaiian classics, as well as for original, new compositions.  His performances can fill the Civic Stadium in Hilo, but in this Intimate Concert, you will have a chance to feel a personal connection as Kuana maps the journey that has brought him to where he is today through talk story and song.

Day two of the festival is a free, day-long, outdoor concert on Sunday, May 20th.  Come to Pohoiki and see performances from Ehulani Stephany and her Halau, youth from four local schools, the Puna Men's Chorus, Sean Robbins, Mark Yamanaka, and headliner, Paula Fuga.  Paula Fuga garnered international recognition when she tried out for the show, American Idol.  Her powerful, soulful voice and beautiful spirit won the hearts of many.  She has released two albums, Lilikoi and Misery’s End, an album on which she can be heard in harmonious combination with fellow Hawai`i resident, Jack Johnson.  Paula is known for using her music and forte to help produce positive social change both at home in Hawai`i and throughout the world, and we are honored to have her as a part of Puna Music Festival.

Indulge yourself with dinner, shopping, and sound at our Pahoa Night Music event on Friday, May 25th.  Medicine For the People will be performing along with Blue Star Octave at Akebono Theater.  Due to their incredibly empowering lyrics, message of unity and hope, stage presence, passion, and talent, Medicine For the People has been growing in popularity by leaps and bounds.  With a unique and powerful sound that makes you want to move, they deliver an inspiring message of awareness to “shine light on the darkness within us all, that we may grow and become better for it. We will sing together remembering our connection as family.”  Come for a whole lot of fun, and let music be your medicine.

On Saturday, May 26th, enjoy an intimate evening with Kainani Kahaunaele.  Kainani’s soothing voice and sound are sure to bring you back to the island no matter where you are. Distinctly Hawaiian, her music is directly influenced by her family, upbringing, and culture. Along with a B.A. in Hawaiian studies, a love for music, her voice, and ukulele, Kainani is also well versed in the practice of haku mele, or the composition of traditional songs. Through her efforts and talent, she has earned several Na Hoku Hanohano awards.  We are thrilled to present this opportunity to spend an evening with her.

Puna Music Festival is more than just entertainment. This event uniquely focuses on crowdsourcing, bridging the audience/performer divide, and Hawaiian music culture.  Experiment with and develop your musical talent in one of our immersive three-day workshops.
