Tropical Flower Arranging Retreat

Ryan Turner

About the Facilitator(s)

Ryan Turner

Ryan spent a year as Kalani’s resident flower arranger and created more than 1,400 works of floral art in that time. From arrangements more than twenty feet high to bouquets only a few inches tall, his flowers helped make the most special memories beautiful and treasured. Ryan's works were displayed throughout Kalani campus and he is regularly commissioned to create special pieces for birthdays, festivals, concerts and weddings. Ryan is influenced by the Buddhist ideals of minimalism and by Japanese and Hawaiian aesthetics. He believes that arranging flowers is a moving meditation that quiets the mind, steadies the breath and facilitates living in the moment.

Art Week at Kalani

Rose Adare and Margaret Stanton

Join us at Kalani for an inspiring week of creative expression and exploration!

About the Facilitator(s)

Rose Adare

Adare began oil painting at 7 years old, falling in love with the great masters even as a child. A “Rembrandt Eye,” requiring corrective surgeries throughout her childhood, gave her two dimensional vision, while Adare’s natural spontaniaty declared her an artist from the start. By 23, she found herself in London, studying Waterhouse, Millais, and John Singer Sargent. But travel requires finance, so she worked with developmentally disabled adults until an accident at work tore the ligaments in both her arms. Determined to regain motor-control, she traveled to Kyoto to meditate, not only on healing, but on her childhood dream of becoming an artist.

A graduate of the San Francisco Academy of Art, Adare learned the depths of layering shadow from Bill Mahn, while Bill Sanchez taught her the dynamic and inherently expressive lines of simple structure and their playfulness. Earning a full three year scholarship, she studied at the Temescal Atelier for Classical Realism under the esteemed living master David Hardy, whose dynamic use of color theory combined elements from his own tutors, Antonin Sterba and William H. Mosby of the American Academy of Art in Chicago, and Joseph Van der Brouk, graduate of the Royal Academy in Brussels.

“David Hardy explores reality through color, from the flusing reds of the neck to the subtle luminosity of a moistened lip–he’s one of the best color theorists in America.” -Adare

During her time at the academy, Adare’s work was featured at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor for a Toulouse Lautrec retrospective (under the name Dara Barber). Adare began her Fine Art career as The Muse Studio, founding the annual Muse Showcase: A Celebration in Art and Music, in Berkeley, CA. Expanding throughout the Bay Area, Rose took on two solo shows, the first at the Sutter Gallery in San Francisco followed by another at Epic Arts in Berkeley.

Struck by a municipal train in 2005, Adare spent the following years in physical rehabilitation, drawing with a pencil taped to her fingers. Bankrupted by medical bills, she discovered a bohemian harbor in Hawai’i where, not for the first time in her life, she retaught her self how to paint. Studying Da Vinci’s notes, Bridgeman’s anatomy, Zorn’s lighting, Klimpt’s elegance, and Fechin’s unique ability to breathe life and motion into his portraits, she returned to the art scene in 2009. Taking off the body braces one by one, she reclaimed her health with her paintrbush. As such, Restraint & Revolution is Adare’s anticipated return to the art scene, immortalizing the amazing advocates, allies and friends she’s met along the way.

Margaret Stanton

Since her birth in Cleveland, Ohio on August 4, 1960, Margaret Stanton has viewed the world through the eyes of a true artist and has lived her life accordingly.

Raised one of six singing and performing children of Eileen and Don Stanton in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Margaret, know to all as Peggy, was immersed in that city’s rich art and musical culture from a young age, she first bloomed both on and off the stage at numerous successful Civic Light Opera and Old Town Studios Theatre productions. Her passion for color began right there on and behind the sets of these theatrical productions, along with the vision and the confidence to paint her first mural during High School.

Margaret served for several years as Art Director for her family’s Stanton Creative Services, Inc., a full-service advertising, public relations and video production agency.  Margaret’s creative passion was to paint. Following that passion, in 1983 she moved to San Diego to study and work with one of that city’s finest and best known professional artists, Lawrence Mansker.

In the ten years that followed, Stanton produced original oils and watercolors for Art Consultants, Collectors and Interior Designers.

Stanton's permanent move to Hawaii in 1993 marked a turning point for the artist. Both her inspiration and her methods were changing. First, the transition was propelled by her visits to Europe, where she and her husband, a native of Prague, visited museums and galleries. For the first time her life, Stanton was able to see in person countless masterpieces from impressionism - Cezanne to Picasso to Matisse - and the experience had a profound impact on her. Secondly, Stanton began painting with acrylics.

Stanton began spending entire summers in Europe developing a looser painting style in the open air in Prague and around Macha's Lake in northwest Bohemia. The unpredictability of the new medium and the challenge of the open air tested Stanton's abilities, and for a few years she worked to develop her methods. The greatest influence on Stanton's recent work was a visit to the Blue Rider's Exhibit in Munich in 2001. Simple, yet brilliantly colored impressions of village life truly impressed the artist.

Through their influence, the paintings of Margaret Stanton were now more dazzling in their use of primary colors; red, yellow and blue. These colors, the colors of Kandinski, Gabriele Munter, Franz Marc, and the American Artist Alfred Maurer, are evident in the 2004 seascapes by Stanton.

Stanton's seascapes incorporate these primary colors with a highly charged surface; far different from the smoother, tighter surfaces of her earlier work. Stanton's method, now, was to start each painting in the open air, and then work on each one in the studio, giving each painting a chance to develop extremely brilliant color and a highly expressive surface.

Since 2005 Margaret Stanton's work has been represented by The Harbor Gallery on the northern Kona coast of the Big Island with a featured exhibition that same year.

As an active member of the East Hawaii Cultural Center, Margaret's Art is frequently exhibited in juried shows both there and at the Wailoa Center in Hilo, Hawaii. All of Margaret's work is presently showing at HawaiiArt.com, Margaretstanton.com and numerous Art directories on the World Wide Web.In pursuing her new way of painting as a colorist working in a new medium, Stanton remains involved in the act of drawing.

Big Island Dance Camp: Immerse Yourself in a World of Dance

Frey Faust - NagaSita - Amy Secada - Nomad Dance - Karin Moriarty - Ann Averbach - Ardas Wright - Michal Anna Carrillo - Sasha Rose - Sharu - ChrisNa Karast - Jayson Fann - Joseph Rynd - Ancient Future - Oliver

February 29, 2016 - March 6, 2016

BIG ISLAND DANCE CAMP is a week-long dance, music and movement intensive, held on the beautiful Kalani Retreat Center on the luscious Big Island of Hawaii.

Expand your dance like never before inparadise with an eclectic ensemble of dance facilitators and modalities.

About the Facilitator(s)

Urban Roots Workshop
with Amy Secada

A transformational dance workshop that focuses on implementing influences from Capoeira and African dance into a primal free form flow.

Learn to ground your personal freestyle and explore floor work with ease and grace.

Accompanied by live musical inspiration, the Urban Roots technique goes beyond movement to guide you deeper into thoughtless improvisation, energetic awareness, breath control.

Tribal Nouveau: Temple Tribal: Sacred Expressions thru Bellydance w. NagaSita

NagaSita’s unique concoction of Tribal Nouveau with Indian Classical,Tibetan, Balinese, Hawaiian, and Japanese fusion.

In this workshop, NagaSita spends the first half with a yoga warm-up, then she breaks down all of the techniques involved to master this exciting new form of fusion.

For the second half of the workshop, she focuses entirely on Temple Tribal choreography which merges all of the techniques broken down in the first half, so that dancers can get a good idea of what this dance style feels like in motion.

Karin Moriarty -
1. Surrendering to The Unknown: Contact Improv
A deep exploration of the basic elements and skills that sustain contact improvisation will be the emphasis of this class. Special focus will be placed on balance, use of energy, force, and directionality. For example, how we can become more efficient with our movements and choices as we move and enter into a dance with others? Students will be guided through a series of exercises that lay the foundation of understanding the interplay between physicality and emotional sensations, in order to create movement, while in concert with a partner.

2. Project Dance:  "Movement Exploration and Emotion”
The class combines elements from Action Theater, modern dance, ritual performance, and Karin’s own unique approach to creating poignant movement for dance pieces. We will travel on an inward journey that may be difficult or uncomfortable at times. But eventually we will arrive at a soothing and safe destination into the past. Bringing our memories alive into the moment, we will replay the emotions and physical sensations we felt at a particular point in our lives. We will tap into these emotions embodied in our memory bank, and reproduce the sensations that we once felt, which may compel us to move now in a particular way! Abandoning the literal meaning of what the circumstances were all about, we will deconstruct the moment, and convert what we find into instruments of movement for our dance.

Michál Anna Carrillo - Traditional Dance from Guinea, West Africa w/ live drums.

In this class you will go through a series of stretches  and warm up movements to ready your body for the energetic and powerful dance of Guinea, West Africa.

You will be exposed to two rhythms with focus on one rhythm, breaking down movements and moving them across the floor.

This class will challenge your right- left brain coordination and be a joyful experience of drums, self expression and cultural immersion

Ann Averbach - Gypsy Yoga Flow

Gypsy Yoga Flow: A Tribute to the Psoas.
Targeting the psoas, we will lenghten, strenghten, and focus on eccentric contractions to create freedom in this pivotal part of our bodies.  Using breath, carefully sequenced asana, and positive visualization, we invite spaciousness and set ourselves up energetically for a joyful and easeful dance camp journey.

Gypsy Yoga Flow: Yoga Ceremony to honor the waters - Liquid asana.
A tribute to the healing power of the waters: together we flow with rhythmic, fluid, sequencing, and honor the water element within ourselves, and pray for the healing of the waters around the planet.

Gypsy Yoga Flow: Mellow Flow and Thai Twists (Partner Thai Massage) w. Ann and Sebastian
Unwind, restore, breathe, and twist in this gentle flow class fused with some partner Thai massage work.

Gypsy Yoga Flow: Delicious Unwind and Partner Thai Glut Release (Partner Thai massage) w. Ann and Sebastian.
You've danced your ass off, now lets get juicy and massage it out! This class is like the dessert at the end of your 20 course Dance Camp Feast.  It will be scrumptious - a slow, sweet flow leading up to partner work.

Frey Faust - Axis Syllabus

In this Axis Syllabus informed session, we will develop oddly poetic and physically and mentally challenging movement studies that will offer an array of subtle gestural qualities as well as athletic demand, while we review or discover the grammar, syntax and etymology, or environmental context, composition, abilities and limitations of our bodies.

The Axis Syllabus is a growing collection of bio-mechanical information that serves a global community as a resource for understanding, preparing and training the human body for moving.

Frey will be offering the following topics:
1. Fascia Nation / Democratic Motion
2. Down to the Bone Carriage - alignment /  NVM - non-violent movement
3. Kinetic Highways - energy sources - sustainable movement

Cocrea Partner Dance - Nomad Dance with Wren & Antje

Partner dance is a metaphor for life. As we push and pull on one another, we elicit different responses, just as in our off-the-floor interactions.

In this workshop we will fine tune our connection and frame viewed through the lens of non-violent communication.

Become more attentive listeners and responders to the purpose of sensing and obtaining consent, learn how to be more sensitive to changes in our partner’s state and watch your dance unfold in new, amazing ways.
