About the Facilitator(s)

Urban Roots Workshop
with Amy Secada

A transformational dance workshop that focuses on implementing influences from Capoeira and African dance into a primal free form flow.

Learn to ground your personal freestyle and explore floor work with ease and grace.

Accompanied by live musical inspiration, the Urban Roots technique goes beyond movement to guide you deeper into thoughtless improvisation, energetic awareness, breath control.

Tribal Nouveau: Temple Tribal: Sacred Expressions thru Bellydance w. NagaSita

NagaSita’s unique concoction of Tribal Nouveau with Indian Classical,Tibetan, Balinese, Hawaiian, and Japanese fusion.

In this workshop, NagaSita spends the first half with a yoga warm-up, then she breaks down all of the techniques involved to master this exciting new form of fusion.

For the second half of the workshop, she focuses entirely on Temple Tribal choreography which merges all of the techniques broken down in the first half, so that dancers can get a good idea of what this dance style feels like in motion.

Karin Moriarty -
1. Surrendering to The Unknown: Contact Improv
A deep exploration of the basic elements and skills that sustain contact improvisation will be the emphasis of this class. Special focus will be placed on balance, use of energy, force, and directionality. For example, how we can become more efficient with our movements and choices as we move and enter into a dance with others? Students will be guided through a series of exercises that lay the foundation of understanding the interplay between physicality and emotional sensations, in order to create movement, while in concert with a partner.

2. Project Dance:  "Movement Exploration and Emotion”
The class combines elements from Action Theater, modern dance, ritual performance, and Karin’s own unique approach to creating poignant movement for dance pieces. We will travel on an inward journey that may be difficult or uncomfortable at times. But eventually we will arrive at a soothing and safe destination into the past. Bringing our memories alive into the moment, we will replay the emotions and physical sensations we felt at a particular point in our lives. We will tap into these emotions embodied in our memory bank, and reproduce the sensations that we once felt, which may compel us to move now in a particular way! Abandoning the literal meaning of what the circumstances were all about, we will deconstruct the moment, and convert what we find into instruments of movement for our dance.

Michál Anna Carrillo - Traditional Dance from Guinea, West Africa w/ live drums.

In this class you will go through a series of stretches  and warm up movements to ready your body for the energetic and powerful dance of Guinea, West Africa.

You will be exposed to two rhythms with focus on one rhythm, breaking down movements and moving them across the floor.

This class will challenge your right- left brain coordination and be a joyful experience of drums, self expression and cultural immersion

Ann Averbach - Gypsy Yoga Flow

Gypsy Yoga Flow: A Tribute to the Psoas.
Targeting the psoas, we will lenghten, strenghten, and focus on eccentric contractions to create freedom in this pivotal part of our bodies.  Using breath, carefully sequenced asana, and positive visualization, we invite spaciousness and set ourselves up energetically for a joyful and easeful dance camp journey.

Gypsy Yoga Flow: Yoga Ceremony to honor the waters - Liquid asana.
A tribute to the healing power of the waters: together we flow with rhythmic, fluid, sequencing, and honor the water element within ourselves, and pray for the healing of the waters around the planet.

Gypsy Yoga Flow: Mellow Flow and Thai Twists (Partner Thai Massage) w. Ann and Sebastian
Unwind, restore, breathe, and twist in this gentle flow class fused with some partner Thai massage work.

Gypsy Yoga Flow: Delicious Unwind and Partner Thai Glut Release (Partner Thai massage) w. Ann and Sebastian.
You've danced your ass off, now lets get juicy and massage it out! This class is like the dessert at the end of your 20 course Dance Camp Feast.  It will be scrumptious - a slow, sweet flow leading up to partner work.

Frey Faust - Axis Syllabus

In this Axis Syllabus informed session, we will develop oddly poetic and physically and mentally challenging movement studies that will offer an array of subtle gestural qualities as well as athletic demand, while we review or discover the grammar, syntax and etymology, or environmental context, composition, abilities and limitations of our bodies.

The Axis Syllabus is a growing collection of bio-mechanical information that serves a global community as a resource for understanding, preparing and training the human body for moving.

Frey will be offering the following topics:
1. Fascia Nation / Democratic Motion
2. Down to the Bone Carriage - alignment /  NVM - non-violent movement
3. Kinetic Highways - energy sources - sustainable movement

Cocrea Partner Dance - Nomad Dance with Wren & Antje

Partner dance is a metaphor for life. As we push and pull on one another, we elicit different responses, just as in our off-the-floor interactions.

In this workshop we will fine tune our connection and frame viewed through the lens of non-violent communication.

Become more attentive listeners and responders to the purpose of sensing and obtaining consent, learn how to be more sensitive to changes in our partner’s state and watch your dance unfold in new, amazing ways.

English Country Dancing Week

Bare Necessities with David Millstone and Joanna Reiner hosted by George Marshall

March 7, 2016 - March 14, 2016

Hawaii Big IslandDURING THE DAY, diverse and beautiful attractions beckon you to explore: dramatic waterfalls, black sand beaches, lava deserts, and lush tropical rainforests evocative of the 'old' South Seas are just some of the wonders.  Here, uncommon beauty is commonplace.  You can set out to watch dolphins play, snorkel calm-water tide pools alive with colorful fish, or dip into warm springs.

About the Facilitator(s)

BARE NECESSITIES, a fine quartet renowned for its unique presentation of English Country Dance music, consists of Earl Gaddis and Mary Lea (violin and viola), Peter Barnes (flute and whistles), andBare Necessities Jacqueline Schwab (piano).  Performing music from the 17th through 21st centuries, they have played for concerts, festivals, workshops, balls and dance camps across the United States and in Canada, Scotland, England and beyond.   In the course of concertizing and dance playing, they have become increasingly free in their improvisatory explorations of these beautiful melodies.  The resulting sound is that of both chamber and folk music, yet extraordinary inventive and playful with its interweaving of harmonies and countermelodies.

As a group, Bare Necessities has recorded more than a baker's dozen CD's to date.  Individually, Peter, Jacqueline, Mary and Earl are well-known and well-traveled musicians within the Contra and Scottish dance communities.

David Millstone started contra dancing in the early 1970s and has been calling dances for nearly 40 years. His monthly dance since 1980 has been with the band Northern Spy in Norwich, Vermont. With an American repertoire ranging from traditional New England chestnuts to high-energy recent compositions, he calls contras, squares, and interesting dances in odd formations. He is an experienced caller of English country dances, and he also enjoys calling for family dances, weddings and other special events.

He is known for his clear and supportive teaching style, the breadth of his repertoire, his sense of humor, and his ability to pick dances that offer the right level of challenge for all audiences.

Joanna ReinerJoanna Reiner has taught English dance, Scottish dance and longsword for over a decade. Nationally supported for her clear, supportive, spirited calling, Joanna's calling has taken her from Amherst to Ann Harbor, from NEFFA to NOMAD, including several Pinewoods sessions. She co-leads Germantown Country Dance's English country demonstration team, is an avid dance gypsy, and in her spare time, works to support her dance habit.

George MarshallGeorge Marshall, originator and producer of Tropical Dance Vacation, is a full-time musician, caller and dance teacher, touring nationally year-round. His specialty is teaching and calling the New England-style contra dances he has collected throughout the country. George is renowned for his knack of matching music to dance and for smooth, concise teaching and presentation.

Toby is currently studying Reiki.  He has served as Director of Youth Prevention Programs for a rehabilitation center and as Director of Environmental Education for a children's science museum. Working in the fields of health and environmental education taught Toby to "practice what he preaches."  He created his business, Shekhinah Holistic, from his desire to help others discover their true essence, and thus, create balance, harmony, and fulfillment.  He focuses on the whole person, believing that a healthy body opens the pathway for a clear mind and infinite spiritual growth.  "When you take the Universe and its possibilities out of the box, you unlimit yourself."

Acro Revolution Teacher Training

Josh Young, Lizzy Tomber, Aaron Lind, Whakapaignia Luke, Sara Laimon Luke

June 18, 2016 - July 1, 2016

Acro Revolution is a 13 day residential teacher training that consists of intensive instruction in L-base acrobatics with a focus on skills including; washing machines, foot to hand, hand to hand, whips, pops, and other circus monkey tricks. In addition to learning techniques to fully embody this practice, you will learn how to teach partner acrobatics at various levels.

About the Facilitator(s)

Josh Young

Acro Revolution Co-Founder, TT Facilitator, Founder of Acropedia, Peter Pan

Josh YoungJosh is happiest when he is empowering others to be the best version of themselves. He spends all of his free time flying everyone through hand-to-hand, washing machines, whips, and pops! When he is not tossing someone around, he is dorking out on cataloging every single acro washing machine, pose and transition. After spending years searching for acro videos on YouTube, Josh came up with the idea to build Acropedia.org: a free resource for acrobats everywhere. Not only does Josh have a deep love for high-level acrobatics, he also practices acropeutics, an inversion healing practice.

Lizzy Tomber

Acro Revolution Co-Founder & TT Facilitator

Lizzy TomberLizzy is life-long circus monkey and now a full-fledge MBA! From the time she could crawl she was monkeying around and was lucky enough to have an older brother that was in the circus. Throughout childhood, Lizzy loved gymnastics, acrobatics, and circus classes. Then like many people, she ‘became an adult’ and mostly forgot about these things until the universe sent her some amazing friends including Josh Young who awakened that inner-child-acrobat!    theyogimba.com

Aaron Lind

Acro Revolution Co-Founder & TT Facilitator

Aaron LindAaron is a renowned teacher of partner acrobatics and an advocate for empowerment through partnership! He has been fascinated by movement-based practices since childhood, which led to many thousands of hours of playful exploration. Aaron has explored and trained many thousands of hours of handstand, gymnastic movement, yoga, and partner acrobatics. He is also a musician, holding an MFA in Jazz Studies and a burlesque artist trained in the New Orleans tradition. He brings a creative flair to his offerings and invites students to cultivate performance as a natural extension of skill-based practice.  www.aaronlindyoga.com

Whakapaingia David Luke

Acro Revolution Co-Founder & TT Facilitator

Whaka LukeWhaka is the spiritual heartbeat of the Acro Revolution tribe. Having always been a warrior and athlete, Whaka found the healing power of acropeutics and the joy of acrobatics when he was living in the US as a professional rugby player. In 2005, he started his healing journey after giving up his perception that yoga “was for girls” and not for tough guys. A few months into his practice, Whaka noticed his body recovered from tough rugby matches without the usual drugs or surgery. Through the path of yoga he learned to heal himself. Whaka then began to give this gift of healing to others by becoming a certified yoga teacher and thai massage practitioner.

Whaka found acro serendipitously on a beach when a women approached him and asked him if he wanted to fly. That woman became his wife, Sara. In one day Whaka found his life long passion and the person he would share that gift to the world with for the rest of his life. Whaka & Sara founded Koha Yoga in 2009. Koha is the Maori word for gift. Whaka & Sara travel around the world with their daughter Tahi, helping people discover the gifts of trust, joy, laughter, play, balance, and release through acro, acropeutics, yoga, and paddle-boarding.  kohayoga.com

Sara Luke

Acro Revolution Co-Founder & TT Facilitator

Sara LukeSara is the official Acro Mama of the Acro Revolution Tribe. Her journey started when she found yoga at the age of 18. Yoga kept Sara grounded and connected to her breath, mind, and spirit. Sara began teaching yoga to her community, but she felt something was missing. Yoga, as traditionally taught, lacked connection with others. The day Sara found herself on top of someone’s feet, flying through the air with the support of another human being, her life changed forever. She immediately started to share a different approach to yoga, an approach with more fun, play, joy, and transformation. Sara is now lucky to share this practice with her love / husband / partner / co-teacher Whakapaingia and their baby girl, Tahi. Sara and her family travel around the world spreading the gift of joy, playfulness, and connection.   kohayoga.com
