English Country Dancing Week

Bare Necessities with David Millstone and Joanna Reiner hosted by George Marshall

March 7, 2016 - March 14, 2016

Hawaii Big IslandDURING THE DAY, diverse and beautiful attractions beckon you to explore: dramatic waterfalls, black sand beaches, lava deserts, and lush tropical rainforests evocative of the 'old' South Seas are just some of the wonders.  Here, uncommon beauty is commonplace.  You can set out to watch dolphins play, snorkel calm-water tide pools alive with colorful fish, or dip into warm springs.

About the Facilitator(s)

BARE NECESSITIES, a fine quartet renowned for its unique presentation of English Country Dance music, consists of Earl Gaddis and Mary Lea (violin and viola), Peter Barnes (flute and whistles), andBare Necessities Jacqueline Schwab (piano).  Performing music from the 17th through 21st centuries, they have played for concerts, festivals, workshops, balls and dance camps across the United States and in Canada, Scotland, England and beyond.   In the course of concertizing and dance playing, they have become increasingly free in their improvisatory explorations of these beautiful melodies.  The resulting sound is that of both chamber and folk music, yet extraordinary inventive and playful with its interweaving of harmonies and countermelodies.

As a group, Bare Necessities has recorded more than a baker's dozen CD's to date.  Individually, Peter, Jacqueline, Mary and Earl are well-known and well-traveled musicians within the Contra and Scottish dance communities.

David Millstone started contra dancing in the early 1970s and has been calling dances for nearly 40 years. His monthly dance since 1980 has been with the band Northern Spy in Norwich, Vermont. With an American repertoire ranging from traditional New England chestnuts to high-energy recent compositions, he calls contras, squares, and interesting dances in odd formations. He is an experienced caller of English country dances, and he also enjoys calling for family dances, weddings and other special events.

He is known for his clear and supportive teaching style, the breadth of his repertoire, his sense of humor, and his ability to pick dances that offer the right level of challenge for all audiences.

Joanna ReinerJoanna Reiner has taught English dance, Scottish dance and longsword for over a decade. Nationally supported for her clear, supportive, spirited calling, Joanna's calling has taken her from Amherst to Ann Harbor, from NEFFA to NOMAD, including several Pinewoods sessions. She co-leads Germantown Country Dance's English country demonstration team, is an avid dance gypsy, and in her spare time, works to support her dance habit.

George MarshallGeorge Marshall, originator and producer of Tropical Dance Vacation, is a full-time musician, caller and dance teacher, touring nationally year-round. His specialty is teaching and calling the New England-style contra dances he has collected throughout the country. George is renowned for his knack of matching music to dance and for smooth, concise teaching and presentation.

Acro Revolution Teacher Training

Josh Young, Lizzy Tomber, Aaron Lind, Whakapaignia Luke, Sara Laimon Luke

June 18, 2016 - July 1, 2016

Acro Revolution is a 13 day residential teacher training that consists of intensive instruction in L-base acrobatics with a focus on skills including; washing machines, foot to hand, hand to hand, whips, pops, and other circus monkey tricks. In addition to learning techniques to fully embody this practice, you will learn how to teach partner acrobatics at various levels.

About the Facilitator(s)

Josh Young

Acro Revolution Co-Founder, TT Facilitator, Founder of Acropedia, Peter Pan

Josh YoungJosh is happiest when he is empowering others to be the best version of themselves. He spends all of his free time flying everyone through hand-to-hand, washing machines, whips, and pops! When he is not tossing someone around, he is dorking out on cataloging every single acro washing machine, pose and transition. After spending years searching for acro videos on YouTube, Josh came up with the idea to build Acropedia.org: a free resource for acrobats everywhere. Not only does Josh have a deep love for high-level acrobatics, he also practices acropeutics, an inversion healing practice.

Lizzy Tomber

Acro Revolution Co-Founder & TT Facilitator

Lizzy TomberLizzy is life-long circus monkey and now a full-fledge MBA! From the time she could crawl she was monkeying around and was lucky enough to have an older brother that was in the circus. Throughout childhood, Lizzy loved gymnastics, acrobatics, and circus classes. Then like many people, she ‘became an adult’ and mostly forgot about these things until the universe sent her some amazing friends including Josh Young who awakened that inner-child-acrobat!    theyogimba.com

Aaron Lind

Acro Revolution Co-Founder & TT Facilitator

Aaron LindAaron is a renowned teacher of partner acrobatics and an advocate for empowerment through partnership! He has been fascinated by movement-based practices since childhood, which led to many thousands of hours of playful exploration. Aaron has explored and trained many thousands of hours of handstand, gymnastic movement, yoga, and partner acrobatics. He is also a musician, holding an MFA in Jazz Studies and a burlesque artist trained in the New Orleans tradition. He brings a creative flair to his offerings and invites students to cultivate performance as a natural extension of skill-based practice.  www.aaronlindyoga.com

Whakapaingia David Luke

Acro Revolution Co-Founder & TT Facilitator

Whaka LukeWhaka is the spiritual heartbeat of the Acro Revolution tribe. Having always been a warrior and athlete, Whaka found the healing power of acropeutics and the joy of acrobatics when he was living in the US as a professional rugby player. In 2005, he started his healing journey after giving up his perception that yoga “was for girls” and not for tough guys. A few months into his practice, Whaka noticed his body recovered from tough rugby matches without the usual drugs or surgery. Through the path of yoga he learned to heal himself. Whaka then began to give this gift of healing to others by becoming a certified yoga teacher and thai massage practitioner.

Whaka found acro serendipitously on a beach when a women approached him and asked him if he wanted to fly. That woman became his wife, Sara. In one day Whaka found his life long passion and the person he would share that gift to the world with for the rest of his life. Whaka & Sara founded Koha Yoga in 2009. Koha is the Maori word for gift. Whaka & Sara travel around the world with their daughter Tahi, helping people discover the gifts of trust, joy, laughter, play, balance, and release through acro, acropeutics, yoga, and paddle-boarding.  kohayoga.com

Sara Luke

Acro Revolution Co-Founder & TT Facilitator

Sara LukeSara is the official Acro Mama of the Acro Revolution Tribe. Her journey started when she found yoga at the age of 18. Yoga kept Sara grounded and connected to her breath, mind, and spirit. Sara began teaching yoga to her community, but she felt something was missing. Yoga, as traditionally taught, lacked connection with others. The day Sara found herself on top of someone’s feet, flying through the air with the support of another human being, her life changed forever. She immediately started to share a different approach to yoga, an approach with more fun, play, joy, and transformation. Sara is now lucky to share this practice with her love / husband / partner / co-teacher Whakapaingia and their baby girl, Tahi. Sara and her family travel around the world spreading the gift of joy, playfulness, and connection.   kohayoga.com

About the Facilitator(s)

Kami Liddle
Kami has studied various dance styles throughout her life, but found her true passion, Belly Dance, when she was 18 years old. She began to study cabaret style belly dance until she found Fat Chance Belly Dance and began to study their videos religiously. Today Kami refers to her style as a modern fusion of an ancient dance. As she began to perform as a soloist she began to incorporate other styles into her ATS repertoire such as modern, hip hop jazz and Bhangra dance. Kami has earned a degree in Art with a Minor in Dance from the University of Nevada, Reno and has been nominated for 'Best Interpretive Artist" for 2005 and 2007 by Zaghareet Magazine. She joined Bellydance Superstars in 2005 and is a contributing choreographer as well as the director of the Tribal Superstars. Kami recently relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Zoe Jakes
An innovative dancer, Zoe has been said to have her own unique take on Tribal Bellydance. She takes her influence from Art Nouveaux, tango, hip hop, and Indian classical dance. She loves unicorns and has never once doubted their existence.  Zoe Jakes adds a third dimension as the diverse and disciplinary dance counterpart to Beats Antique’s sound. Jakes has worked with two major dance troupes, including Miles Copeland’s Bellydance Superstars and Rachel Brice’s Indigo Belly Dance Company, and is a student of ballet and contemporary techniques.

Kalae Kaina
Born and raised in Hawaii, descended from Hawaiian ancestry, Kalae started her belly dance journey at the tender age of 15 under the direction of Jean Yanagawa. She now has nearly 20 years of Belly Dance experience under her belt. In her quest to study Classical Indian Dance, stemming from a deep desire to serve Krsna, Kalae searched Honolulu for a teacher only to stumble upon belly dance. It was love at first dance! In 2007 Kalae made the trek to study Odissi at the Odissi Institute with Ratna Roy at the Evergreen State College, it was an experience she will never forget.

Over the years Kalae has had the amazing opportunity to study from outstanding teachers such as Zoe Jakes, Kami Liddle, Rachel Brice, Mira Betz, Jill Parker, Collena Shakti and many more!  Kalae hosts the annual Hawaii Retreat with Zoe Jakes & Kami Liddle at the Kalani Retreat center on Hawaii Island. She is certified level 2 in Rachel Brice's 8 Elements and dances for Zoe Jakes House of Tarot!!!

Kalae began teaching in 2004, and shortly after formed her own Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Company, Shakti Dance Movement.  Shakti Dance Movement is Honolulu's premier Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Company and has been making the pilgrimage to Tribal fest annually since 2006. In 2010 she formed her Student group Devi Dance Company who have blossomed into an accomplished and dedicated group of ladies. As lead Choreographer and Artistic Director Kalae is continually expanding her dance knowledge by first and foremost being a staunch student.

FatChanceBellyDance General Skills and Teacher Training

Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman and Megha Gavin

July 16, 2016 - July 24, 2016

Join Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman, founder of American Tribal Style® dance and owner of FatChanceBellyDance® along with her Tribal Pura International partner, Megha for a dance intensive that will change the way you understand belly dance.

About the Facilitator(s)

Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman

An early fascination of permanent body adornment lead 8-year old Carolena to request that her Father, Carl, a collector himself, to buy a ring she could “wear always and not take off.” This concept evolved into the study of folkloric textiles, a body full of tattoos and a collection of jewelry and textiles from around the world.

The discovery of belly dance led to the creation of her own dance style, American Tribal Style® (ATS®) Belly Dance. FatChanceBellyDance® was founded by Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman in 1987 and immediately captured the attention of audiences worldwide with stunning dance performances featuring majestic costuming and layers of tribal jewelry. The music, a carefully chosen collection of both traditional sounds and modern fusion adds to the effect. American Tribal Style® looks old, but it is actually new.

Carolena has compiled a montage of different “tribal” elements into what has been coined American Tribal Style® Belly Dance. ATS® movements are inspired by folkloric dances of the Middle East and India. Aesthetically ATS® is based on the richness of textiles and jewelry from North Africa and India. ATS® is a method of improvisational choreography, using a vocabulary of natural movements and cues allowing the dancers to communicate via gesture and eye contact when dancing together. The effect is vibrant thread drawing the audience into the tapestry.

Currently Carolena directs FatChanceBellyDance® at her studio and resource center in San Francisco, CA. She masterminds the business side of the Nakarali Jewelry Company, co-owned with Colleena Shakti. Students can find classes in San Francisco, via Skype, and soon to arrive On-line Classes. Instruction is further augmented by a collection of instructional DVDs and international workshop travel. Through workshops such as Tribal: Pura with Megha Gavin, Carolena and her FatChanceBellyDance® instructors take ATS® around the globe. In addition to instruction, Carolena provides business consultation in the form of Tribal Counsel and ATS® Troupe Consulting.

When she’s not traveling the globe or working at her studio, Carolena enjoys spending time with her partner Loretta Nericcio-Bohlman, exercising, sewing, knitting and reading.

Megha Gavin began performing very early in life. She took her first dance classes at about the age of 4 and has been creating and performing ever since. Theatre soon caught her attention and that was her passion throughout her schooling years. It was in 1996 that she discovered American Tribal Style® Bellydance and immediately shifted her focus to this art form.

In San Francisco, Megha studied ATS® with the originator of the style from 1996 – 1998. Upon returning to the Southeast, she began teaching ATS® classes in order to create a community of people to dance with. She was the first to offer these classes in this region and has continued teaching pure ATS® for the last 16 years. She continues to teach and perform at sold out workshops across the country and around the world both individually and on the Tribal Pura tour with her teacher/partner, Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman.

In 2003 Megha completed teacher certification with Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman (creator of ATS® and founder of FatChanceBellyDance®) and entered into an exclusive partnership with her. They now take their love and appreciation of this elegant dance style in its original form on the road to co-teach the technique and artistic vision created by Carolena over the last 25 years.

Megha directs the Birmingham, AL based “Devyani Dance Company.” Under her direction, Devyani has performed at countless theatrical events, festivals, weddings, corporate events and private parties over the last 15 years and has been nominated for multiple cultural and artistic awards.

In January 2014, Megha moved to Dallas, TX and while still directing Devyani, she withdrew from teaching weekly classes and shifted her focus instead to the Tribal Pura International events and offerings with Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman.

When not teaching and performing ATS®, Megha homeschools her daughter and studies plant based nutrition, reiki and essential oils.
