Hula AuanaJoin us as we celebrate great moments of Hawaiian culture. Throughout the week we will learn traditional songs, chants, myths, crafts, language, plant uses and hula - in both kahiko (ancient) and ‘auana (post 1860) forms.

We will also attend Merrie Monarch Hula Festival evening ceremonies, performances and competitions at the Edith Kanakaole Stadium in Hilo.

Delilah will be teaching Power Belly with musician Erik Brown and then sharing each day with 2 award winning artists, Dahlia Moon and Amy Sigil of Unmata fame. Lara has been a dancer all her life, sourcing from a broad music and dance knowledge base. Her studies in Mali, Africa bring music and authentic skills to the eclectic mix. "Wassa" is the Bambara name given to Lara, and translates loosely as "one who acts for joy and fulfillment.” Lara conducts workshops, retreats, and community performance art/choreography locally and internationally. Her work includes school programs, as well as fund raising for micro-lending for African community projects. Included in this 7-day sweet island style retreat are: daily dance intensives, delicious daily meals, shared lodge accommodations and use of Kalani’s grounds, pool, sauna and spa. All registrations require a $500 deposit.* Final payments are due March 1, 2010. CANCELLATION POLICY: If you find yourself unable to attend, we will refund your money, pending the ability to replace your reservation for this trip. All cancellations include a $30 fee. After January 15, 2010, Kalani room and board charges are non-refundable, and will also be your financial responsibility.
*For island residents or vacationers wishing to attend the daily dance intensive without Kalani residence or meals, drop-in rates per class and weekly options are available as space allows. Pre-registration is strongly suggested for this option--which also includes a Kalani day pass with each class/series purchased. Lodging and meal options at Kalani may be purchased separately through Kalani.

Elisa GamalElisa Gamal

Elisa Gamal is entering the third decade of her love affair with Middle Eastern dance! She took her first belly dance class in 1987, and made her professional debut to the stages of Seattle in 1994 after being hand picked by the MB Orchestra to join them as a house dancer. Highlights of her career include winning numerous solo and group awards including the 1999 Bellydance USA and 2006 Seven Veils Champion titles, being featured on the cover of Jareeda magazine, and performing as a guest with the Bellydance Superstars on their first US tour.

Elisa enjoys an active performance schedule, appearing at several Seattle area venues, dance festivals, and cultural events including the Northwest Folklife Festival and bi-annual Seattle Arab Festival.

A sought-after instructor and intuitive, supportive and effective coach, Elisa has watched several of her current and past students gain national recognition and win trophies and titles in nearly every major US belly dance competition. AlimahAlimah

Alimah was introduced to belly dance in 2001 and since has won many awards, including Belly Dance Nationals National Champion 2009, Shimmilicious Soloist Champion 2009, Lillies of the Valley Professional as well as Professional Challenge Winner 2008, Belly Dancer USA 2005, and Double Crown Performing Artist 2004. She now performs arabic music as the violinist in House of Tarab, and a mix of world music with Avaaza. Before her obsession with dance began, Alimah spent years playing violin in professional orchestras across the country. She holds a Masters in Music from Yale University, and has taught violin workshops around the northwest. She draws on her background as a musician to develop practice and performance strategies, as well as to understand phrasing and compositional technique. Erik Brown

Erik began serious study of Arabic percussion in 2003 after a ground breaking lesson with master percussionist Souhail  Kaspar. As an eternal student he has continued to study with many master percussionists including Faisel Zedan, Said el Artist, Issam Houshan Karim Nagi, Uncle Mafufo , and Tobias Roberson to name a few. Today, Erik is one of the most sought after player in the northwest, and he’s renowned for his ability to connect with dancers during live performances. As the Tabla player for the “House of Tarab” ensemble Erik strives to represent an authentic sound in Arabic music.   www.houseoftarab.com

He has taught B.O.S.U., Balast Ball, Cardio Ball, Kickboxing, Cycling, Boot Camp, Cardio Groove, NYC Ballet Workout, Heavy Ball Training, Step, Body Jam, Meditative Sports Stretch, and taught workshops nationally and internationally.

Joti has been a certified private trainer and group exercise facilitator since 1993. He has been featured in Men's Health, Inshape, SF Chronicle, and recently in Hula Heaven.
