Thrive for Gay & Bi Bears

LJ Bates & Stewart Blackburn

About the Facilitator(s)

LJ Bates

As an enthusiastic member of the Bear Brotherhood, LJ was a founding member of the NY Metrobears, helping them secure their nonprofit status and helping to create the “Big Apple Bearfest.”  Since coming to Hawaiʻi, LJ has always tried to bring Hawaiʻi Island Bears together…but because there are so few on the Island, LJ decided to bring the Bears to the paradise!

By unanimous vote of the Board of Directors and Management Team, LJ Bates III became Kalani Executive Director in October 2012.

After more than a decade in Hawaiʻi, LJ has always been in service to Hawaii Island communities in various roles since his arrival: Executive Director, VASH Hawaiʻi Island, Vice President / Executive Director of the Island of Hawaiʻi YMCA / Kona Family YMCA, Treasurer on the Board of Directors for the Hawaiʻi Island HIV/AIDS Foundation, and as a member of the Rotary Club of Kona.

LJ has his undergraduate degree in Nonprofit Management, with a minor in Group Dynamics, from Springfield College in Massachusetts.  After moving to New York City to pursue an internship, which evolved into a wonderful career with the YMCA of Greater New York, YMCA of the USA, YMCA of East Bay and various other YMCAs, LJ became a specialist in Youth & Teen Development; creating retreat curriculum, program designs and lesson plans for YMCAs throughout the Nation.

In addition to managing Kalani, LJ presently: 1) owns and operates his own consulting business (LJB3 Consulting, llc, which he created while pursuing his MBA from Baruch College; performing fund development, strategic planning, board development and operations management for several non-profits), and 2) acts as a Founder and CFO of Dodecki Software, Ltd.

Stewart Blackburn

Stewart Blackburn is a Shaman of Pleasure. That is, he primarily works his shamanic healing magic through the instruments of pleasure and joy. He is the author of "The Skills of Pleasure: Crafting the Life You Want" and numerous articles on pleasure, shamanism, and consciousness. He also does his healing work through counseling, shamanic journeys, and ritual. He has taught over 350 ongoing Huna Healing classes (Hawaiian shamanism) at Kalani and dozens of workshops.

Stewart has been a ardent student of shamanism, mysticism, and practical spirituality for over 25 years and has been an ordained Alaka’i (a senior teacher or minister) of Aloha International for the last 10 years. Through his years as a professional chef, he developed a keen sense of the subtleties of pleasure and how to assist others in increasing their own expansion of pleasure.

Stewart is a man with a mission. He envisions great changes on Earth through the efforts of people who have come to know and express themselves fully. Ua ola loko, i ke Aloha – Love heals from within! He sees his role as that of a midwife to the rebirth of people’s authentic selves.

He now lives happily in the jungle on the island of Hawaii with his dog, Pono.

"Will is a passionate, wise, and loving teacher in a league of his own. I feel inspired and empowered after every Practical Yoga class." – Cameron, Hawaii

“The Yoga retreat was an unforgettable experience! You add a depth and quality to the philosophy, keeping it interesting and fun/light…” – Mark, Canada

“I wanted to thank you. You were such a big part of making this (retreat) experience so magical for me. I have practiced yoga on and off the mat for years, but practicing with you made me fall in love with it again. Not just do it to do it, but rather do it because I love it. I’m happy to say that I have practiced everyday since returning back to LA. So, thank you.

I had a chance to chat with a couple of the guys after our retreat had ended and we all seemed to have had the same response to you. You’ve got such an authentic self that brought not just comfort to the group, but also excitement…You are a beautiful person inside and out….You impact people, you just do. Someone once said to me, “After you’re gone, people will not remember what you said or what you did, but how you made them feel.” And I keep thinking how true that is. More than anything, you made me feel so good, so excited. What a beautiful thing that is.”

Art Week at Kalani

Rose Adare and Margaret Stanton

Join us at Kalani for an inspiring week of creative expression and exploration!

About the Facilitator(s)

Rose Adare

Adare began oil painting at 7 years old, falling in love with the great masters even as a child. A “Rembrandt Eye,” requiring corrective surgeries throughout her childhood, gave her two dimensional vision, while Adare’s natural spontaniaty declared her an artist from the start. By 23, she found herself in London, studying Waterhouse, Millais, and John Singer Sargent. But travel requires finance, so she worked with developmentally disabled adults until an accident at work tore the ligaments in both her arms. Determined to regain motor-control, she traveled to Kyoto to meditate, not only on healing, but on her childhood dream of becoming an artist.

A graduate of the San Francisco Academy of Art, Adare learned the depths of layering shadow from Bill Mahn, while Bill Sanchez taught her the dynamic and inherently expressive lines of simple structure and their playfulness. Earning a full three year scholarship, she studied at the Temescal Atelier for Classical Realism under the esteemed living master David Hardy, whose dynamic use of color theory combined elements from his own tutors, Antonin Sterba and William H. Mosby of the American Academy of Art in Chicago, and Joseph Van der Brouk, graduate of the Royal Academy in Brussels.

“David Hardy explores reality through color, from the flusing reds of the neck to the subtle luminosity of a moistened lip–he’s one of the best color theorists in America.” -Adare

During her time at the academy, Adare’s work was featured at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor for a Toulouse Lautrec retrospective (under the name Dara Barber). Adare began her Fine Art career as The Muse Studio, founding the annual Muse Showcase: A Celebration in Art and Music, in Berkeley, CA. Expanding throughout the Bay Area, Rose took on two solo shows, the first at the Sutter Gallery in San Francisco followed by another at Epic Arts in Berkeley.

Struck by a municipal train in 2005, Adare spent the following years in physical rehabilitation, drawing with a pencil taped to her fingers. Bankrupted by medical bills, she discovered a bohemian harbor in Hawai’i where, not for the first time in her life, she retaught her self how to paint. Studying Da Vinci’s notes, Bridgeman’s anatomy, Zorn’s lighting, Klimpt’s elegance, and Fechin’s unique ability to breathe life and motion into his portraits, she returned to the art scene in 2009. Taking off the body braces one by one, she reclaimed her health with her paintrbush. As such, Restraint & Revolution is Adare’s anticipated return to the art scene, immortalizing the amazing advocates, allies and friends she’s met along the way.

Margaret Stanton

Since her birth in Cleveland, Ohio on August 4, 1960, Margaret Stanton has viewed the world through the eyes of a true artist and has lived her life accordingly.

Raised one of six singing and performing children of Eileen and Don Stanton in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Margaret, know to all as Peggy, was immersed in that city’s rich art and musical culture from a young age, she first bloomed both on and off the stage at numerous successful Civic Light Opera and Old Town Studios Theatre productions. Her passion for color began right there on and behind the sets of these theatrical productions, along with the vision and the confidence to paint her first mural during High School.

Margaret served for several years as Art Director for her family’s Stanton Creative Services, Inc., a full-service advertising, public relations and video production agency.  Margaret’s creative passion was to paint. Following that passion, in 1983 she moved to San Diego to study and work with one of that city’s finest and best known professional artists, Lawrence Mansker.

In the ten years that followed, Stanton produced original oils and watercolors for Art Consultants, Collectors and Interior Designers.

Stanton's permanent move to Hawaii in 1993 marked a turning point for the artist. Both her inspiration and her methods were changing. First, the transition was propelled by her visits to Europe, where she and her husband, a native of Prague, visited museums and galleries. For the first time her life, Stanton was able to see in person countless masterpieces from impressionism - Cezanne to Picasso to Matisse - and the experience had a profound impact on her. Secondly, Stanton began painting with acrylics.

Stanton began spending entire summers in Europe developing a looser painting style in the open air in Prague and around Macha's Lake in northwest Bohemia. The unpredictability of the new medium and the challenge of the open air tested Stanton's abilities, and for a few years she worked to develop her methods. The greatest influence on Stanton's recent work was a visit to the Blue Rider's Exhibit in Munich in 2001. Simple, yet brilliantly colored impressions of village life truly impressed the artist.

Through their influence, the paintings of Margaret Stanton were now more dazzling in their use of primary colors; red, yellow and blue. These colors, the colors of Kandinski, Gabriele Munter, Franz Marc, and the American Artist Alfred Maurer, are evident in the 2004 seascapes by Stanton.

Stanton's seascapes incorporate these primary colors with a highly charged surface; far different from the smoother, tighter surfaces of her earlier work. Stanton's method, now, was to start each painting in the open air, and then work on each one in the studio, giving each painting a chance to develop extremely brilliant color and a highly expressive surface.

Since 2005 Margaret Stanton's work has been represented by The Harbor Gallery on the northern Kona coast of the Big Island with a featured exhibition that same year.

As an active member of the East Hawaii Cultural Center, Margaret's Art is frequently exhibited in juried shows both there and at the Wailoa Center in Hilo, Hawaii. All of Margaret's work is presently showing at HawaiiArt.com, Margaretstanton.com and numerous Art directories on the World Wide Web.In pursuing her new way of painting as a colorist working in a new medium, Stanton remains involved in the act of drawing.

Life Reboot Camp ™

Wendy Lu

October 18, 2015 - October 23, 2015

About the Facilitator(s)

Formerly known as a Harvard alumna, MBA graduate, and Director at a large international consulting firm, Wendy Lu is your personal guide for the Life Reboot Camp retreat experience.

Wendy spent 15 years working in the business world – where she served as a leadership development and training professional, organizational change consultant, and executive coach. There, she helped scores of individuals and teams navigate the challenges of ground-shifting change.

Wendy has taken many important lessons from organizational change in business and fused them with her own personal and spiritual development work. She now uses this knowledge and insight to help people effect life changes more holistically. Her work is founded on the insight of self-awareness and the empowerment of personal choice.

Wendy's personal mission is to guide people in making an intentional shift: from simply balancing work-life to
fully embracing their life's work. Her ultimate goal is to co-create a world where our professions are not driven by ego, fear, greed or habit, but instead reflect a chosen expression of each person's unique genius and creative capacity.

Are you curious, but not quite sure yet if this retreat is for you? Let’s connect! We can chat and explore whether this experience is the best fit for your needs, and if not, we’ll try to point you in the direction of other resources.

Tuning In To Source

Maxwell Stark-House and Toby Gant

Join us for a time of letting go, healing, and expanding your deep connection to Source. Root yourself into the fiery, yet nurturing and grounding Earth energy of our beautiful island with early meditations. Allow the energy to rise up and course through you with our morning flow yoga. Feel your fears and frustrations melt away with our late day Intuitive Yoga. Expand into Divine Light through guided journaling exercises and dancing to the elements. We will tune in as individuals and unite our collective energy to manifest the presence and healing power of the Divine.

About the Facilitator(s)

Maxwell Stark-House

Maxwell is a yoga teacher; massage therapist, Dj, dancer and artist. He was first introduced to yoga and eastern practices by his mother when he was 10yrs. old and has been interested in alternative medicine and the healing arts ever since. He has studied with many different teachers around the world such as: Kathy Elder, Shiva Rea, Lino Miele, Daren Friesen, Les Leventhal, Duncan Wong and Liz Heffernan. He received his yoga teacher-training certificate in 2003 at Kalani Honua Oceanside Retreat Center on the Big Island of Hawaii, as well as his massage therapist license. He also received his aquatic bodywork license in 2009. Maxwell is the founder of Intuitive Yoga, an innovative approach to yoga that moves beyond the poses and into our own intuitive sense of what our body needs most at any given moment. He is currently teaching weekly classes of Intuitive Yoga, Yin Yoga and Intuitive Aquatic Movement at Kalani Honua.

Toby Gant

Toby discovered the innate ability to listen to Source in 1999.  This ignited a passion in him to teach others to tune in for themselves and expand into their full potential. Toby continued down this path by completing his M.Ed. in Counseling and Human Development in 2003 at Hardin-Simmons University and later studying Tantric Vinyasa yoga under Tracee Stanley in Topanga, CA.  He continues to expand his knowledge and connection through personal daily practices, workshops, and retreats. Toby is currently studying Reiki.  He has served as Director of Youth Prevention Programs for a rehabilitation center and as Director of Environmental Education for a children's science museum. Working in the fields of health and environmental education taught Toby to "practice what he preaches."  He created his business, Shekhinah Holistic, from his desire to help others discover their true essence, and thus, create balance, harmony, and fulfillment.  He focuses on the whole person, believing that a healthy body opens the pathway for a clear mind and infinite spiritual growth.  "When you take the Universe and its possibilities out of the box, you unlimit yourself."
