About the Facilitator(s)

Urban Roots Workshop
with Amy Secada

A transformational dance workshop that focuses on implementing influences from Capoeira and African dance into a primal free form flow.

Learn to ground your personal freestyle and explore floor work with ease and grace.

Accompanied by live musical inspiration, the Urban Roots technique goes beyond movement to guide you deeper into thoughtless improvisation, energetic awareness, breath control.

Contact Improv with Karin Moriarty
1. Surrendering to The Unknown: Contact Improv
A deep exploration of the basic elements and skills that sustain contact improvisation will be the emphasis of this class. Special focus will be placed on balance, use of energy, force, and directionality. For example, how we can become more efficient with our movements and choices as we move and enter into a dance with others? Students will be guided through a series of exercises that lay the foundation of understanding the interplay between physicality and emotional sensations, in order to create movement, while in concert with a partner.

2. Project Dance:  "Movement Exploration and Emotion”
The class combines elements from Action Theater, modern dance, ritual performance, and Karin’s own unique approach to creating poignant movement for dance pieces. We will travel on an inward journey that may be difficult or uncomfortable at times. But eventually we will arrive at a soothing and safe destination into the past. Bringing our memories alive into the moment, we will replay the emotions and physical sensations we felt at a particular point in our lives. We will tap into these emotions embodied in our memory bank, and reproduce the sensations that we once felt, which may compel us to move now in a particular way! Abandoning the literal meaning of what the circumstances were all about, we will deconstruct the moment, and convert what we find into instruments of movement for our dance.

Frey Faust - Axis Syllabus
In this Axis Syllabus informed session, we will develop oddly poetic and physically and mentally challenging movement studies that will offer an array of subtle gestural qualities as well as athletic demand, while we review or discover the grammar, syntax and etymology, or environmental context, composition, abilities and limitations of our bodies.

The Axis Syllabus is a growing collection of bio-mechanical information that serves a global community as a resource for understanding, preparing and training the human body for moving.

Frey will be offering the following topics:
1. Fascia Nation / Democratic Motion
The intersecting points of the more rigid aspects of our bodies act as indicators for risk assessment and resilience, while their lengths provide the scaffolding for the active, gel and cable-like masses of muscles, nerves, veins/arteries and organs. The study of these meeting points, where so much is at stake, provides us with a powerful lens for evaluating personal needs and qualifying alignment.

2. Down to the Bone Carriage - alignment /  NVM - non-violent movement

3. Kinetic Highways - energy sources - sustainable movement
The human body offers certain possibilities in order to create and recucle kinetic energy. The three "proximal motors": the pelvis, torso, and head; and the four "peripheral motors", the arms and legs, can be dropped towards the earth or tipped of balance in order to create momentum. The resulting energetic exchange from core to periphery and back propels the body through space, sparing effort and injury. In this class we will work with a sequential activation and release of these motors to augment, conserve and deploy kinetic energy while moving.

Sacred Dances of the Silk Road with Miriam Peretz

1. Dance Art Sanctuary
A highly ritualistic, fluid, ethno-contemporary class focused on exploring ways to embody prayers and intentions through movement and dance while opening the senses and awareness to the space and to each other. We search for spirals in the body, moving from the center, finding deeper breath in movement, and using dance as a healing art. Movement style is ethno-contemporary with influences from various world dance traditions. Each class offers a theme based on a soul trait (character refinement,) that inspires an improvisational element exploring personal story and process. The class also draws heavily on Miriam’s choreographic repertoire.

2. Sacred Dance of the Silk Road
Persian & Central Asian dance infused with contemporary and devotional movement practices. This unique workshop form developed by Miriam Peretz, offers a full range of expression from traditional Silk Road dances, to devotional, contemporary, and improvisational movement. The session begins with an invocation, a greeting of the divine presence within the group and space, becoming fully present, and connecting with community in the sacred circle of dance. Then moving onto an intensive contemporary inspired warm-up, focusing on the spirals of the body, fluidity in the spine, contract/release, and getting the blood flowing. Then the class moves into traditional techniques of either Persian or another Silk Road dance form, culminating in short combinations and or choreography. This workshop also focuses on numerous styles of Central Asian turns.
3. Turning Towards the Heart
A journey in creating devotional dances through turning, poetry and heart. In the sacred circle of community we will meet each other face to face, and join our hearts in breath, song, dance, and prayer. With whirling at the core of our movement, we will explore different ways to move through space in circles and spirals. By incorporating elements of focused breath-work,
various turning practices, ritualized movement, and intentions, we will create personally meaningful and interpretative dances.

Cocrea Partner Fusion with Wren and Antje of Nomad Dance

Experience a deeply connected practice in embodying presence and integrating your movement with others in an emergent folk dance. In these 1.5 hour classes, we’ll explore concepts and techniques in connection, intimacy, sovereignty, and creative expression within the framework of traditional social partner dance with two major differences – no steps to learn, and no set genre of music. Just your kinetic genius, and your partner’s, in conversation. In the Cocréa CommunYum Jam, journey through a loosely guided experience winding ever closer into unity consciousness and physical connection with your Big Island Dance Camp community.
Viewing life as a dance, Cocréa is a continually evolving holistic movement modality intended to bring individuals into strong, empowered, expressive relationships with their bodies. Cocréa blends the connected, structural integrity of social partner dance, with the organic, blissful expression of free dance. Together, we learn to listen and respond in every moment to co-create spontaneously and practice presence to move together as one. Weaving the threads of collaboration, cross-pollination and consciousness, Wren and Antje’s focus is on how dance can enhance and expand relationships into a deeply connected, honest and powerful tool for personal, interpersonal and transpersonal co-creation and transformation.

Tribal Nouveau: Temple Tribal: Sacred Expressions thru Bellydance w. NagaSita

NagaSita’s unique concoction of Tribal Nouveau with Indian Classical,Tibetan, Balinese, Hawaiian, and Japanese fusion.

In this workshop, NagaSita spends the first half with a yoga warm-up, then she breaks down all of the techniques involved to master this exciting new form of fusion.

For the second half of the workshop, she focuses entirely on Temple Tribal choreography which merges all of the techniques broken down in the first half, so that dancers can get a good idea of what this dance style feels like in motion.

Karin Moriarty -

Michál Anna Carrillo - Traditional Dance from Guinea, West Africa w/ live drums.

In this class you will go through a series of stretches  and warm up movements to ready your body for the energetic and powerful dance of Guinea, West Africa.

You will be exposed to two rhythms with focus on one rhythm, breaking down movements and moving them across the floor.

This class will challenge your right- left brain coordination and be a joyful experience of drums, self expression and cultural immersion

Ann Averbach - Gypsy Yoga Flow

Gypsy Yoga Flow: A Tribute to the Psoas.
Targeting the psoas, we will lenghten, strenghten, and focus on eccentric contractions to create freedom in this pivotal part of our bodies.  Using breath, carefully sequenced asana, and positive visualization, we invite spaciousness and set ourselves up energetically for a joyful and easeful dance camp journey.

Gypsy Yoga Flow: Yoga Ceremony to honor the waters - Liquid asana.
A tribute to the healing power of the waters: together we flow with rhythmic, fluid, sequencing, and honor the water element within ourselves, and pray for the healing of the waters around the planet.

Gypsy Yoga Flow: Mellow Flow and Thai Twists (Partner Thai Massage) w. Ann and Sebastian
Unwind, restore, breathe, and twist in this gentle flow class fused with some partner Thai massage work.

Gypsy Yoga Flow: Delicious Unwind and Partner Thai Glut Release (Partner Thai massage) w. Ann and Sebastian.
You've danced your ass off, now lets get juicy and massage it out! This class is like the dessert at the end of your 20 course Dance Camp Feast.  It will be scrumptious - a slow, sweet flow leading up to partner work.

2. Down to the Bone Carriage - alignment /  NVM - non-violent movement
3. Kinetic Highways - energy sources - sustainable movement

Cocrea Partner Dance - Nomad Dance with Wren & Antje

Partner dance is a metaphor for life. As we push and pull on one another, we elicit different responses, just as in our off-the-floor interactions.

In this workshop we will fine tune our connection and frame viewed through the lens of non-violent communication.

Become more attentive listeners and responders to the purpose of sensing and obtaining consent, learn how to be more sensitive to changes in our partner’s state and watch your dance unfold in new, amazing ways.

English Country Dancing Week

Bare Necessities with David Millstone and Joanna Reiner hosted by George Marshall

March 7, 2016 - March 14, 2016

Hawaii Big IslandDURING THE DAY, diverse and beautiful attractions beckon you to explore: dramatic waterfalls, black sand beaches, lava deserts, and lush tropical rainforests evocative of the 'old' South Seas are just some of the wonders.  Here, uncommon beauty is commonplace.  You can set out to watch dolphins play, snorkel calm-water tide pools alive with colorful fish, or dip into warm springs.

About the Facilitator(s)

BARE NECESSITIES, a fine quartet renowned for its unique presentation of English Country Dance music, consists of Earl Gaddis and Mary Lea (violin and viola), Peter Barnes (flute and whistles), andBare Necessities Jacqueline Schwab (piano).  Performing music from the 17th through 21st centuries, they have played for concerts, festivals, workshops, balls and dance camps across the United States and in Canada, Scotland, England and beyond.   In the course of concertizing and dance playing, they have become increasingly free in their improvisatory explorations of these beautiful melodies.  The resulting sound is that of both chamber and folk music, yet extraordinary inventive and playful with its interweaving of harmonies and countermelodies.

As a group, Bare Necessities has recorded more than a baker's dozen CD's to date.  Individually, Peter, Jacqueline, Mary and Earl are well-known and well-traveled musicians within the Contra and Scottish dance communities.

David Millstone started contra dancing in the early 1970s and has been calling dances for nearly 40 years. His monthly dance since 1980 has been with the band Northern Spy in Norwich, Vermont. With an American repertoire ranging from traditional New England chestnuts to high-energy recent compositions, he calls contras, squares, and interesting dances in odd formations. He is an experienced caller of English country dances, and he also enjoys calling for family dances, weddings and other special events.

He is known for his clear and supportive teaching style, the breadth of his repertoire, his sense of humor, and his ability to pick dances that offer the right level of challenge for all audiences.

Joanna ReinerJoanna Reiner has taught English dance, Scottish dance and longsword for over a decade. Nationally supported for her clear, supportive, spirited calling, Joanna's calling has taken her from Amherst to Ann Harbor, from NEFFA to NOMAD, including several Pinewoods sessions. She co-leads Germantown Country Dance's English country demonstration team, is an avid dance gypsy, and in her spare time, works to support her dance habit.

George MarshallGeorge Marshall, originator and producer of Tropical Dance Vacation, is a full-time musician, caller and dance teacher, touring nationally year-round. His specialty is teaching and calling the New England-style contra dances he has collected throughout the country. George is renowned for his knack of matching music to dance and for smooth, concise teaching and presentation.
