Ecstatic Living Retreat PosterAloha!

About the Facilitator(s)

Max Fathom

Max Fathom

Max came to the conscious dance movement through the "doorway" of a 5 Rhythms group in Austin,Texas called Body Choir. After 5 years with that group he moved to Hawaii and started Ecstatic Dance Big Island. This group spawned many other groups around the country, the largest of which is Ecstatic Dance East Bay, which itself has spawned many groups around the country, as well as the planet. This movement is expanding. “I feel like my particular contribution to the conscious dance movement and specifically what is now commonly referred to as Ecstatic Dance, has to do with combining the electronic dance music that is part and parcel of the DJ culture and the 5 Rhythms or Wave format that was created by Gabrielle Roth. The wave is a perfect fit for facilitating ritual, community dance space. I enjoy using electronic music for these events, equally I have a vastmusical collection and nothing is off limits if I believe that it will inspire, motivate, move and touch the participants on the dance floor. I am excited to see this movement grow because I believe it is a valuable and worthwhile contribution to our New Earth and our awakening human collective.”

Maxwell Starkhouse

Maxwell StarkhouseMaxwell first came to the Big Island of Hawaii in 2001 as a volunteer at Kalani Honua. He soon discovered Ecstatic Dance and was so inspired by the musical, dance journey that he began to attend the weekly dances at Kalani as well as attending various yoga classes a few times a week. In 2003 he completed his first yoga teacher training with Kathy Elder and began teaching weekly Intuitive Yoga classes. In the same year he became a Licensed Massage Therapist and began offering sessions. He then went on to travel to Chicago for a Yogic Arts teacher training and then onto India to practice Ashtanga Yoga in Kerala and discovered Vipassana Meditation in Gujarat. When he returned to Hawaii and the dance community, he yearned for more tribal and world music. So this inspired him to become a DJ. In 2009, he DJ-ed at Kalani’s Ecstatic Dance and has been collecting music and DJ-ing ever since. At Kalani, he also teaches Intuitive Yoga classes, Intuitive Aquatic Movement classes (in the warm therapy pool) and works as a Massage Therapist, offering sessions on the massage table and, uniquely, in the water. He also enjoys playing various musical instruments, spinning fire, bodysurfing and playing in Hawaii's nature.

Lino Laure

Lino LaureLino discovered the joy of Ecstatic Dance at Kalani in 2003 when he moved to the Big Island of Hawaii 10 years ago. Dancing has always been part of his life and the nature of Ecstatic Dance, as a conscious dance process, fulfilled his spiritual inclinations. In 2009 when Lino moved to Kalani, he accepted the honor of facilitator for Ecstatic Dance Hawaii (one of the largest venue in the US) and has been facilitator for Ecstatic Dance Hawaii since. In his personal life, Lino has been practicing meditation for over thirty years and studied under the auspices of his teacher, JK Gurukal, a master healer and martial artist from Kerala, India, learning aspects of yoga, meditation, martial arts and the healing arts: applied sciences from the tradition of Dhanurveda. Lino is also a painter and artist. He enjoys sharing all of his various skills by way of teaching and facilitating workshops and classes at Kalani, on the Big Island of Hawaii, where he also resides.

About the Facilitator(s)

As always, we have chosen instructors with a proven track record for teaching, engaging their students, AND the ability to present material in a variety of musical genres. Here’s who will be there to instruct and inspire you: Sarah Maisel (you can see how excited she is to be making her Hawaiian debut), Peter d’Aquino, Bryan Tolentino, Andy Andrews, and Dave Egan. To offer guest workshops and local insights, we will also be drawing from the significant pool of local Hawai’i Island talent: Keoki Kahumoku, Alan Hale, Kona Bob, Chuck Moore, Ka’ulani Trainor, and more. Naturally, there will be more of an emphasis on Hawaiian music and culture than we have at Asilomar and Camp O, but please note that all other musical genres will be well-represented at the Hawai’i Island ‘Ukulele Retreat.

About the Facilitator(s)

Shakti Sunfire is a vibrant and passionate teacher of hoop dance and yoga. Now a resident of San Francisco, she draws on her own experiences and her heavy participation in the community to encourage unfettered self-expression centered in the heart. Her message is one of radical self acceptance. She teaches and performs internationally.

www.shaktisunfire.com

Luna Breeze ~ Exotic, energetic, and entertaining, Luna Breeze extends far beyond the acrobatic. As a hoop dancer, her choreography blurs the line between entertainment and performance art - a focus on the magic of illusion and the interaction of hoop and dancer. She is known for her fusion of modern dance, tradition circus skills, and musicality within her dance. As a teacher she is known for her accessibility, goofy sense of humor and serious attitude of positive empowerment through the ring.

The material in any of Luna’s classes has been acquired through personal exploration in yoga, dance and circus arts at accredited studios around the world. She is a firm believer in the power of research, and the simple act of trial, error, experimentation and fearless play.

Luna is currently attending circus school at Pendulum Aerial Circus Arts in Portland Oregon, where she studies aerial silks, trapeze, and acrobatics, while teaching and performing circus hula hoop for the school. Her days are filled with choreography, training for performance, and studying the human body to ensure that her students and she advance efficiently, safely and happily whether performer or hobbyist!

Safire ~ Safire is a world-renowned circus and fire entertainer, skilled in a variety of movement arts, with a range of performance experience and is one of the world’s most known hoop dancers. She has performed in over 12 different countries around the world and has appeared in dozens of television spots, magazines, newspapers, blogs and more.

Safire has been training in the circus arts since 2006 and works full-time as a professional entertainer and fire dance instructor. She continues to develop her skills through regular training sessions, workshops, theatre courses, and by attending conventions around the world.

She has been touring with Bellydance Superstars since the fall of 2005 and can be seen performing on their new Tribal Fusions DVD. Combining talents with David Satori and Tommy Cappel to form the band Beats Antique, which released the album Tribal Derivations last spring, Zoe is currently working on its sequel. As she began to perform as a soloist she began to incorporate other styles into her ATS repertoire such as modern, hip hop jazz and bhangra dance. Kami has earned a degree in Art with a Minor in Dance fromthe University of Nevada, Reno and has been nominated for'Best Interpretive Artist" for 2005 and 2007 by Zaghareet Magazine.
