The deep tissue workshop will provide the theory and hands-on practice necessary for students to gain a basic understanding of deep tissue/structural release massage techniques. Students in this workshop will attain the skills necessary to address chronic pain, chronic hypertonicity, muscular/facial adhesions and limited range of motion. Focus will be on common problem areas including musculature of the spine, low back, hamstrings, deep rotators and gluteus; iliacus/psoas release; chest, diaphragm and shoulder release; and musculature of the neck. The 24 hour course will include the following topics:

  • Strategy of deep tissue massage
  • Indications/contraindications for deep tissue massage
  • Techniques in deep tissue massage (prone/supine/sidelying)
  • Range of motion techniques
  • Active/passive movement techniques
  • Assessment techniques
  • Practical application of learned deep tissue techniques

Prerequisite: Students must have a proficient working knowledge of human anatomy/ physiology and basic Swedish/lomi massage techniques. This can be attained through either completion of the anatomy/basic massage technique workshops; a demonstrated practical working knowledge; or a combination of the two.

Daniel Albers, LMT has practiced massage on the Big Island of Hawaii since 1993. He currently serves on the massage staff at Kalani Oceanside Retreat and maintains a private practice in Hilo, HI. His practice focuses on Lomilomi, deep tissue, structural release and aromatherapy. He has been conducting Lomilomi massage workshops for the past 11 years at schools and retreat centers on the Big Island and in California, Washington State and Canada. His teaching style strives to incorporate a balance of humor and intensity. The classes are fast-paced and geared toward intermediate to advanced level students/therapists.
