Wassa Dance LogoPlease join us for for "Wassa Dances with Aloha" at Kalani Oceanside Retreat Center on the Big Island, Hawaii!!

Merge with the vibrations of Aloha, the power of earth-based rhythms and sink into your essential being in this week-long intensive combining GYROKINESIS® with Marie Chong and WASSA DANCE with Lara McIntosh. Our dancing will be inspired by some of this planet’s newest earth, an active volcano, the oceanside, rainbows, a lush tropical setting and movement crafted from the heart of rhythm. Our soundscape will include the ever present ambient tones of our tropical environment along with music scores derived from Lara’s extensive African and World Music library. We will meet each morning for an extended and deep immersion in GYROKINESIS®, WASSA DANCE's afro-infused style, metaphor, music, and guided movement meditation. Spontaneous afternoon and evening offerings for group or individual sessions are TBA throughout the week. GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® are registered trademarks of Gyrotonic Sales Inc. and are used with their permission.

About the Facilitator(s)

LARA MCINTOSH believes that anyone who moves is already a dancer. She has danced all her life. As a performer, teacher, and choreographer, Lara explores rhythm, spirit, craft, and community to unlock the movement potential in others. An active member of the Seattle drum-and-dance communities for many years, her Afro-infused dance style is inspired by travels to Brazil and Mali, West Africa. “Wassa” is the Bambara name Lara received during one of her visits to Mali. It means “one who acts for joy and fulfillment.” Her curiosity about movement and cultures, combined with a deep love for music, are lifelong muses. She offers residencies in local schools and intensive retreat-style workshops internationally. (Photo by Michael Harthorne)

MARIE CHONG has been teaching various movement-related disciplines for over 20 years: Ballet, Pilates, GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®. Marie was a professional ballet dancer which fostered a lifelong interest in healthy movement. Her knowledge of the body, kinesthetic movement, and various therapeutic modalities is an asset that she continues to develop and pass on to her students and clients. She is the Director/Owner of ARC School of Ballet and the Artistic Director of ARC Dance Company in Seattle, Washington, USA where she also works with private clients that include musicians, singers, actors, dancers, elite athletes, as well as non-professional movers to design individually-tailored healthy postural and kinesthetic improvements.
