Introduction to Yoga Retreat for Men
Joel Benjamin, jaRed sam & Dennis Dehler
Escape the winter season to Hawaii, where you can experience the joy of discovering the benefits of the ancient practice of yoga. Join an all male group of beginning yoga practitioners on the Big Island as we explore the basics of a gentle yoga practice at Kalani Oceanside Retreat. Under the guidance of Joel, JaRed and Dennis, we’ll explore kundalini breathwork and meditation, stretching, chanting and partner yoga in a relaxing, tropical environment. Afternoons will be free to explore black sand beaches, snorkeling and other nearby volcanic areas.
The Kalani Introduction to Yoga Retreat was created specifically for men because in the West the world of yoga is dominated by a millions of wonderful women. Our goal is to provide an atmosphere of male camaraderie and brotherhood in which to learn this ancient healing art.
This retreat is designed for those beginning their yoga journey and the atmosphere held will be supportive for individual needs. And even those who may not consider themselves "beginners" any longer, but are interested in reviewing (or maybe learning for the first time) some of the foundational aspects of yoga are also encouraged to participate in this retreat. Over the span of one week, participants will experience two to three classes per day. Each class is designed and paced to provide the maximum opportunity for learning and safe growth. By the end of the week, it is our hope that participants come away with the same amount of understanding and ability that would have taken 6-8 weeks to achieve in an average introductory series. Options and variations will be offered so each person can find an authentic connection to a yoga practice that serves his ability to cultivate peace, health and happiness in their own life. We will have plenty of free time to enjoy the pool and all that Hawaii has to offer, including relaxing in hammocks and enjoying quiet time. Evening optional activities will include hula, massage, and relaxing in Kalani’s hot tubs under millions of stars.
About the Facilitator(s)
Joel Benjamin is very excited to be teaching a yoga retreat at Kalani- one of his most favorite places on the planet. He has been practicing yoga since 1998, and has been teaching since 2004. Joel believes that when the ancient yogis created what we refer to today as yoga, it was never their intention to design a series of exercises to develop "yoga butt," (even though this is how many in the West have come to view this 5,000 year old art form.) Yoga is a system of breathwork, mindfulness, and physical postures all designed to improve the quality of our lives by bringing us into the present moment, opening our hearts, and making us better human beings. At its core, Joel believes that the true intention of yoga is to create embodied presence and emotional responsiveness.
Joel has a BFA from Syracuse University in Theatre, and is certified to teach yoga from Pacific Yoga, and master teacher Max Strom. He is also a member of the Yoga Alliance. Joel owns Yoga Shack, a private yoga school in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle.
jaRed has been learning, deepening and sharing his yoga flow practice at Kalani for the past ten years. He first discovered his resonance with yoga through the ashtanga primary series with Pamela Richardson in the summer of '97. He graduated from Kathy Elder's original yoga teacher training class in 2001, with fellow students Dennis Dehler and Peter Lavina.
jaRed has since deepened his understanding of teaching vinyasa flow yoga through intensives with Duncan Wong and Shiva Rea. He has felt honored and inspired by the teachings of Shiva, Kathy, Duncan, Saul David Raye and many others. He continues to hold a sacred space for breath, gratitude, yoga and love in his weekly classes at Kalani Oceanside Retreat.
Dennis agrees with Pattabhi Jois' statement in the movie Enlighten Up that the main goal of yoga is to discipline the mind. Dennis feels that Kundalini Yoga is one of the most effective, fun and quickest methods to practice the art of disciplining the mind.
His approach is gentle and focuses on opening up the energy centers in the body with Kundalini Yoga exercises. He has studied with Kundalini master Gurmukh and completed Yogi Bhajan's Kundalini Teacher Training. His classes are invigorating, grounding, intuitive, fun and leave you feeling centered, calm and smiling.
