Yoga for Every BODY

Kimberly Dark

Come experience the beauty of Hawaii as this special group gathers to practice yoga, tell stories and explore the wisdom of the body in nature, the body in culture.

Each day features expert yoga instruction designed to accommodate new and experienced practitioners alike. There will also be optional activities and plenty of time to explore one of the world's most stunning physical environments.

Whether you’re a long-term yoga practitioner or a beginner, this retreat will help you laugh and re-connect with your highest potential for alignment and restoration. Regardless of one’s strength, abilities, size or body type, we all live with cultural messages about the body.  Yoga teaches us that we practice for others as well as for ourselves. As yoga has become a Western fitness craze, many body types have been left behind and many skillful physical practitioners relate to their own bodies with unreasonable expectations. Through level-specific instruction, you’ll practice the benefits of yoga: strength, balance and flexibility – and learn how to take those concepts into a life full of self-love.

Pleasure is a sign that things are going well and there’s no better place to discover the pleasure of a peaceful heart and enlivened physical practice than in the rainforest of Hawaii.  The fun storytelling activities (truly: fun and never intimidating) help uncover the language and biases we have about bodies that hinder our movement into more vibrant living.  In addition to our yoga sessions, we have also planned adventures to the most inspiring sites in the region.  You’ll be nestled in a rain forest surrounded by fiery lava, crashing sea, tropical foliage and people celebrating the joy of being alive. There will be plenty of time for relaxation or to engage with Kalani’s Hawaiian culture programs, classes and events.  Connect with others during family style meals on the open air dining lanai, enjoying the healthy, local, mostly organic food for which Kalani is famous.  Yoga mats, props and blankets are all provided.

Body diversity and individuals with disabilities are quite welcome - and Kalani Honua, as a nature/cultural retreat, is not fully wheelchair accessible. Please contact us with concerns; we will
assist in finding off-site accommodations and attempting to meet physical needs during the retreat, as appropriate.

About the Facilitator(s)

Kimberly Dark is a master facilitator who has led groups to awareness and understanding on three continents over the past twenty years. In addition to teaching yoga since 1999, she’s a writer and storyteller whose work has been invited to hundreds of colleges, universities, theatres, festivals and conferences. Her yoga classes focus on strength, balance, flexibility and peace for every body – an ability to practice radical self-love and acceptance while learning the skills of peace and cultural transformation. She blogs regularly for Huffington Post and Ms. Magazine in addition to contributing essays and stories about personal and cultural transformation via body acceptance to a variety of books and publications.

Kimberly uses an Iyengar-style training and more than twenty years experience with diverse yoga practices to challenge and welcome students of every ability and body type. She has taught yoga styles ranging from vinyasa, yin and restorative to prop-assisted hatha yoga for people who don’t feel comfortable in fitness settings due to size, health or anxiety. Her classes encourage personal sovereignty, inner voice and an entitlement to health and vibrancy at all sizes, ages and abilities.
