Frequently Asked Questions - Workshops and Groups

What are the check-in/check-out times?
Check in time is 4:00 pm. You may arrive early but we cannot guarantee that your room will be available until 4:00 pm. Check out time is 11:00 am. Late check outs are sometimes possible, however a fee may apply.
How many people can Kalani accommodate?
Based on all accommodations, we can lodge as many as 117 guests, not including camping. We also coordinate outside B&B rooms for overflow.
How do I choose my accommodations?
We assist you in choosing a basic range of accommodations for 10 people in order to determine your initial deposit and make it as affordable as possible. The preference is mostly in double lodge rooms, however the types and quantities of rooms will change as your number of participants increases.
Do I have to pay extra for workshop space?
No. All our workshop spaces are included in the group fees and all you need to do is specify which space is needed and for how long.
What is the cost for group adventures sponsored through Kalani?
Our adventures are priced by half or full day. Please consult your Kalani representative for information about group rates.
Are the meals included in group rates?
Yes. Kalani has special rates for groups that include lodging and meals, starting with dinner on day of arrival and ending with lunch on day of departure.
Can Kalani accommodate special dietary requirements?
We will happily accommodate special dietary needs for your group members (such as vegan, raw foods and low fat) with two weeks advance notice.
When is rainy season? When is the best time to schedule a workshop?
Kalani enjoys Hawaii's ideal climate: light ocean breezes, sunny days, pleasant year-round temperatures (65-85°F) and occasional tropical showers. You may schedule your workshop any time of the year.
Are there telephones available for out-going calls?
We have phone lines available at Guest Services from 8:00 am - 8:00 pm.
Will my cell phone work at Kalani?
We are out of range for most cell phone networks , however there is some limited reception on the property. Guests with AT&T as their service provider seem best able to get a decent signal.
Can I check my email at Kalani?
You can check your email on a Kalani PC for an hourly fee (inquire at reception). If you have a laptop, you may use wired Ethernet lines (RJ-45 jack) available in the lounge. If you have a laptop with a wireless card, service is available in several places on property, including Hale Aloha. Usage is free, but please be aware that wireless access is limited in the jungle environment. Large downloads are strongly discouraged (No hogging the network!). Dial-up service is not available.
What to expect - is Kalani suitable for my workshop?
Kalani is a community that celebrates life in ways that embrace a natural lifestyle. We live in harmony with the jungle environment, which means you will probably encounter harmless creatures such as spiders, geckos and mongoose. There are mosquitoes here, so we recommend that you bring a repellent spray. Our accommodations are simple and comfortable, with no televisions or phones. You may view photos of our rooms. If you have any questions about your stay, feel free to contact us online or call us at (800) 800-6886 (toll-free in USA and Canada) or (808) 965-7828 (worldwide).
Is there a charge to participate in daily Kalani activities?
We offer a wide variety of daily activities, which every workshop participant may enjoy if time allows. Each class is $15 except for certain free activities such as hula and volleyball.
What should I bring?
Sneakers/hiking shoes, a long sleeve shirt and pants (for evenings), and (available at Kalani Gift Shop) flip-flops, shorts, T-shirts, swimsuit, sun block, insect repellent, battery operated alarm clock, and flashlight. If participating in adventures please bring water sandals with ankle straps.
Is smoking permitted at Kalani?
Smoking is permitted in designated areas only.
Do you provide transportation to and from the Hilo airport?
We offer transportation for our guests. The price is $45 per person (if more than one person) or $65 for a single pick-up/drop off. The regular taxi rate is about $90. The cost of pickup and drop off for your participants is NOT included in our group rates.
Do I need to rent a car?
We are located 15 miles from the nearest town and there is limited public transportation. There are many natural attractions in the vicinity. These can be visited by taking part in one of our adventures. If you prefer to explore on your own, renting a car from the airport is a good option.
Can I bring my children to Kalani?
Children are always welcome here at Kalani. However, we do not provide childcare. We can provide contact information for several reliable childcare providers in the area.
