In-Depth is an annual intensive hoopdance retreat held on the Big Island of Hawaii at Kalani Oceanside Retreat, produced by Caroline Cárdenas of The Hula Hoop Girl. An intimate setting with a  maximum capacity of 35 participants, In-Depth seeks to provide focused, fun, and challenging hoopdance material for intermediate and advanced practitioners while holding creative and safe space for unplanned and unknown Big Island MAGIC to occur. The In-Depth experience is designed to take seasoned and even beginner hoopdancers to their edge in trick, choreography, and technique in a supportive, playful and relaxing retreat environment.

Tuition for the full week of classes, experiences, jams, and activities is $785 USD.

  • You can choose to place a non-refundable deposit of $350 in order to hold your place.
  • To complete your enrollment in the In-Depth Retreat your registration must be paid in full by November 20, 2017.

Kalani is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization. Your stay here supports education, community arts programming, and Hawaiian cultural preservation within the District of Puna. Kalani has grown to become the largest provider of services in Puna – thanks to the support from guests like you!

Kalani retreat rates are all-inclusive and provide access to mealsaccommodations, and use of Kalani's amenities including our clothing-optional 25-meter pool, and hot tubs. Kalani cannot pro-rate fees for late arrivals or early departures. Registration for the full retreat experience is required. Prices vary based on housing preference:

Airport Transportation

Kalani offers shuttle service from Hilo International Airport (ITO), which can be arranged via Kalani Guest Services, [email protected] or 808.965.0468. Please send flight details, including airline carrier and flight number with your shuttle request. We also pick up from the downtown Hilo bus station and hotels. Shuttle service is subject to availability; one-way pricing is $50 per person for shared rides and $75 per person for single bookings. If you require airport shuttle service, please contact us to make your reservation a minimum of one week in advance.

Taxi service is available from ITO or Hilo Downtown for a one-way fare of approximately $125.


Cancellations up to 7 days in advance of arrival incur a $75 administrative fee. Cancellations within 7 days of arrival incur forfeiture of fees paid up to $250. No refund will be provided for no-shows or cancellations within 24 hours of scheduled arrival, 4:00 pm on check-in date. No refund will be provided for early departures from retreat programs. Participation in any parts of programs at Kalani Honua is completely voluntary.

Kalani Honua reserves the right to dismiss a participant at any time before, during or after a program if one:

  • Becomes dangerous or harmful to self, others, or property
  • Behaves disruptively or inappropriately
  • Is not able, for whatever reason, to be present for learning
  • Breaks the law
  • Refuses to cooperate with program leaders or Kalani Honua management
  • Does not pay accordingly for program or services provided

Caroline Cárdenas also known as ‘Sweet Caroline’ is the creator of The Hula Hoop Girl, an Embodied Movement Meditation Self-Care Practice that guides women to reconnect to their own natural born rhythm while feeling empowered to self-resource and self-express through the transformational power of body play. Caroline’s life work, grounded in women’s health and women’s empowerment began at the age of 21, when her mother Grace, passed away from Breast Cancer. It was at that moment that Caroline began her soul work in the world. She holds a Master of Science in Nursing Education, is a certified Breast Care Nurse, a 200hr Registered Hatha Yoga Teacher, a certified Elemental Hoopdance Teacher, and a certified 5Elements Ecstatic Dance Facilitator. Her Master's Thesis "Hoop Dancing to Prevent and Decrease Burnout and Compassion Fatigue Among Nurses" has been published in the Journal of Emergency Nursing & the UCSD Nursing Journal. Sweet Caroline guides women and healthcare professionals to use joy replenishment through body play practices as a powerful self-care intervention, she leads hoopdancing classes and workshops for women's empowerment, and she speaks passionately about how play is a basic human necessity to inspire the imagination, foster human development, and nurture a great quality of life. Caroline is an advocate for joy and encourages all women to dance in the center of their joy, in or out of their hoop circle.

Morgan aka MissMoJangles is a Los Angeles-based hoop performer, international instructor, and was recently named the 2016 USA Hooper of the Year. She is Known for her sassy Hoopography performances, creating the Hooptown Hotties and for her award-winning hoop videos including Despondence, Halo, Bang Bang, Portal, Flowmance, and Dark Paradise. Morgan loves teaching others how to express their personality & creativity through hoop dance through Hoopography. She is excited to guide you through some sweet hoopdance tricks, techniques, and some hoop flowetry so that you can add to your repertoire of hoopdance grooves.

Rachael Lust
Rachael Lust is a former gymnast and the daughter of a gymnastics coach. She spent the majority of her childhood and adolescent years training and teaching gymnastics. When she stumbled upon the hula hoop at age 24, she noticed the power of hooping and how it began to fulfill the void that she had been experiencing since stepping away from gymnastics. Fast forward 5 years, Rachael has taught close to 100 workshops across the states. She holds gratitude for every student she has encountered. Her vision when facilitating hoopdance, is for every human being to feel supported as they gain skills and knowledge, while also having fun! Hooping has brought some amazing opportunities Rachael's way. Rachael feels a sense of reward to be able to bring hooping into our mainstream culture, guiding people from all walks of life to try hooping for themselves and perhaps be surprised by the magic it offers.

Tulasi Adeva Perrin was born and raised in Hawaii and lives in the beautiful island of Kauai. She is a creative alchemist fusing somatic psychology, yogic philosophy, earth-based wisdom and expressive arts to heal the wounded feminine, revitalize women's creative brilliance, and inspire authentic soul-centered leadership. She has guided hundreds of women to return to an embodied sense of center and walk their unique path with clarity and confidence, personally and professionally.
