Join us for a yoga retreat in paradise at Kalani Oceanside Retreat Center in Hawaii, on the Big Island. Kalani is an educational nonprofit devoted to yoga, wellness, performing arts, nature, and Hawaiian Culture. The true meaning of 'ohana (family) awaits at this yoga retreat center set among black sand beaches, volcanoes, and pineapple coconut ice cream. Kalani offers healthy cuisine, comfortable accommodations for every budget, rejuvenating bodywork treatments, recreational facilities, and educational adventures. Slow down and re-connect to the best part of who you are in a beautiful location, bordered by tropical jungle and the Pacific Ocean. This retreat is designed to give you time for yoga, writing, reflection, relaxation, and adventure. Practicing yoga and writing together can change your life in the most profound and liberating ways. Find the quiet spaces between your thoughts. Practice putting your thoughts into words and your words onto paper. Cultivate a clear vision of what you desire, step into the silent realm where all possibilities exist and let your desires be known. This retreat will offer tools to explore your writing and yoga practice, inspiration to create a life you love, deepened connection with yourself and shared experience in a group. Even if you don't consider yourself a "writer", combining yoga and putting pen to paper can be a transformative experience.
Practice yoga twice daily, with a vinyasa flow practice in the morning and calming practice in the evening. Each yoga asana session preceded or followed by meditation and guided writing session. In addition to yoga, there is time each day to relax by the pool, jacuzzi, sauna, enjoy body treatments or explore the Big Island.
Optional Adventures Include:
- Friday, August 3rd - Explore Pohoiki Beach Park, bring a picnic lunch, go for a swim and enjoy the Pohoiki Warm Springs. This small, volcanically heated hot pond is surrounded by a lush vegetation and is located in a lava sink. Then visit Ahalanui Warm Pond, this volcanically heated spring water feeds into a warm pond which mixes with ocean water and is a local favorite.
- Saturday, August 4th - Visit Rainbow Falls, See two gorgeous waterfalls on one short hike. This pleasant 0.4-mile uphill hike will take you through a lush rainforest filled with orchids, bamboo groves, and draping ferns. As you follow the paved footpath, you'll see 100-foot Kahuna Falls and just around the bend, you'll see towering Akaka Falls which plummets 442 feet into the steam-eroded gorge. Then shop in Hilo Town and Hilo Farmers Market.
- Sunday, August 5th - Relax at Kaimu Hou Coconut Beach. Walk over new lava flows from the 80's, visit the Kalapana photos and new clippings gallery and stroll along the coast.

Kalani retreat rates are all-inclusive and provide access to meals, accommodations, and use of Kalani's amenities including our clothing-optional 25-meter pool and hot tubs. Kalani cannot pro-rate fees for late arrivals or early departures. Registration for the full retreat experience is required.

Kalani offers shuttle service from Hilo International Airport (ITO), which can be arranged via Kalani Guest Services, [email protected] or 808.965.0468. Please send flight details, including airline carrier and flight number with your shuttle request. We also pick up from the downtown Hilo bus station and hotels. Shuttle service is subject to availability; one-way pricing is $50 per person for shared rides and $75 per person for single bookings. If you require airport shuttle service, please contact us to make your reservation a minimum of one week in advance.
Taxi service is available from ITO or Hilo Downtown for a one-way fare of approximately $125.
Cancellations up to 7 days in advance of arrival incur a $75 administrative fee. Cancellations within 7 days of arrival incur forfeiture of fees paid up to $250. No refund will be provided for no-shows or cancellations within 24 hours of scheduled arrival, 4:00 pm on check-in date. No refund will be provided for early departures from retreat programs. Participation in any parts of programs at Kalani Honua is completely voluntary.
Kalani Honua reserves the right to dismiss a participant at any time before, during or after a program if one:
- Becomes dangerous or harmful to self, others, or property
- Behaves disruptively or inappropriately
- Is not able, for whatever reason, to be present for learning
- Breaks the law
- Refuses to cooperate with program leaders or Kalani Honua management
- Does not pay accordingly for program or services provided
Sonia Roberts is a certified yoga teacher with 15 years of teaching experience. She has a passion for helping others reach their full potential. Her classes are challenging, nurturing and integrate mindful movement.
Sonia is a graduate of the Piedmont Yoga Advenced Studies Program, studying with Richard Rosen, Rodney Yee, Clare Finn and Maritza. She has completed YogaWorks 200 hour teacher training with Mynyx Inatsugu and Melanine Salvatore-August. Sonia also completed Jane Austin's Pre-Natal Yoga Teacher Training at Yoga Tree in San Francisco. As a lofelong student of yoga, she has completed a variety of workshops with master yoga teachers and enjoys continuing her yoga education.
Her training has been includenced by many teachers and traditions, including Iyengar, Ashtanga, Vinyasa and Anusara. Her life as a mother has given her an abundance of opportunity for deepening her yoga practice and living in the moment.
Sonie has a BA in Social Welfare and Dance Minor from UC Berkeley. She is devoted to helping others discover their true self through yoga, writing and meditation.
