Permaculture Principle #2: Catching and Storing Energy

How can we capture and store the Earth’s energy? Well we can capture it in more ways than you think! The main sources of energy can be found in our environment, buildings, and even society. So let’s break it down.

 Landscapes

What is Earth’s largest source of energy? The Sun! We can capture and store the Sun’s energy by planting biomasses, ideally trees and woodland plants, that will contribute to the overall healthy development of soil which is the world’s largest and most important source of living carbon.

Buildings

One advantage that we have on nature is that we can control our living and working dispositions. We can create an environment where our structures maximize the Sun’s energy by building them to coincide with the light of day for less electricity use and to capture as we can through solar power.

Household

Energy comes in many forms. As humans we rely on food as our energy source. When you harvest, be sure to find ways to preserve or prolong the life of your energy sources. Start canning, jamming, and fermenting! Continue to harvest seeds from your yield to keep replanting each season and keep the flow of growth steady!
