Hawaiian Cultural Class Series 2024

Our center is proud to partner with Hua ʻĀina and Kumu Leialoha Ilae-Kaleimamahu for these Hawaiian cultural class series, including Hula and Hawaiian Language, hosted on the lands of Ke’eke’e (where Kalani Retreat Center resides). These series each offer a unique opportunity to connect with Hawaiian culture and enrich your experience on the Hawaiian islands.

Hula class series

LEVEL I (BEGINNER) STUDENTS
TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS 11:30 AM – 12:45 PM

$150 PER MONTH

Join us for this Hula I Class Series taught by the talented Cultural Practitioner Leialoha Ilae-Kaleimamahu. Beginner classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 am – 12:45 pm, with a start date to be determined once a minimum number of students for the course is met.  A minimum number of 8 registered students is required to run the course. Beginner hula classes registration can be done by contacting our team.

Hawaiian language class series

LEVEL I (BEGINNER) STUDENTS
WEDNESDAYS 10 AM – 12 PM

This weekly Hawaiian Language Class Series is taught by the talented Cultural Practitioner Leialoha Ilae-Kaleimamahu at Kalani Retreat Center. This series is an in person ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language) class series with 1 class per week on Wednesdays for 2 hours, with a start date to be determined. A minimum of 8 students is required to start the course. This class takes place on the Hale Aloha lanai at Kalani Retreat Center (Ke’eke’e). 

Classes are set at a rate of $130 per month and students must register online for classes in advance using the link below. If you would like to be informed of future Hawaiian Language Class opportunities or join the next cohort of learners, please reach out to our team at Kalani or to Kumu Lei.

Workshop Series

There are several workshops for the September – December season with a variety of topics addressed. More details about each workshop is listed below.

Please note the location for each workshop as the first two will take place at Ke’eke’e (the lands where Kalani Retreat Center resides) in the Blue Moon Room, while the others will be in other locations in Puna, at Kaimu and Keahialaka respectively.

MELE OLI: KEIKI AND 'OHANA

A unique invitation for keiki to bring a family member to learn an oli together and have the opportunity to use in action on the ʻāina (land). The workshop will be taught by Kumu Leialoha Ilae-Kaleimamahu of Hua ʻĀina. This workshop will take place at Ke’eke’e (the lands where Kalani Retreat Center resides) in the Blue Moon Room. Lei āʻī : lei adornment

KO PUNA KAI MO'OLELO

Ever wonder about some of the ancient stories of a place? Come learn about some of the ka’ao of Kaimū and some new ones too. These stories have shaped the people and the place to what we have today. KE AO POLOHIWA A KANALOA

The name for the winter solstice – Ke Ao Polohiwa a Kanaloa. Come join us as we enter into the time of Kanaloa and celebrate the season through a morning ritual that puts us in the mindset to commemorate this time of year in Hawai’i thorough a Hawaiian prospective. The workshop will be taught by Kumu Leialoha Ilae-Kaleimamahu of Hua ʻĀina. This workshop will take place at Ke’eke’e (the lands where Kalani Retreat Center resides) in the Blue Moon Room. About your Kumu

Leialoha Ilae-Kaleimamahu is from Mokuhulu, Puna on the island of Hawaiʻi. She presently works and creates educational experiences in Hawaiʻi through her business called Hua ‘Āina (leikcreative.com).

She’s been teaching for a little over 30 years and taught at the community college in Hilo for about 10 years. She’s a mother of three and married for 18 years. Her passion is being on the land and creating special educational opportunities for herself and others. She focuses on Hawaiian language, the Hawai’i Environment and Practices of Hawaiian culture which includes Hula and ʻŌlelo (Hawaiian Language).

Her experience as a Kumu has led her down a path that is truly unique to who she is. She’s taught hula for 25 years in and outside of Puna, and comes from a tradition of hula through the lineage of Hālau o Kekuhi. She is presently working at maintaining her hula training through practice and teaching within the community of Puna.
