About us
Nestled within 40 acres of oceanside forests in Keʻekeʻe, along Hawaiʻi Island’s Puna coast, Kalani offers a unique lodging experience rooted in nature, community, and connection. Guests are invited to experience the beauty of East Hawaiʻi through simple accommodations, wellness services, community events, and access to one of the island’s most vibrant natural environments.
Kalani serves as a gathering place for travelers, artists, educators, and local residents, hosting weekly events, cultural programs, classes, and community celebrations throughout the year. Here, the focus is not on resort amenities, but on immersion in nature, off the beaten path experiences, and meaningful connections that exemplify the spirit of aloha.

Dance & the arts
Creativity is woven into the culture of Kalani and the artistic community of Hawaiʻi’s Puna District. Throughout the year, guests and local residents are invited to participate in art classes, dance gatherings, music events, creative workshops, and community celebrations that inspire self-expression and connection.
From the weekly Ecstatic Dance and occasional Open Mic Nights to spontaneous special performances, Kalani provides a welcoming space where artists, musicians, dancers, and creators can gather, share, and become inspired by the creative environment of East Hawaiʻi.
Serving local goods
Hale Aloha serves as Kalani’s welcome center, offering guest information, essentials, and a thoughtfully curated selection of local goods. Visitors can browse locally made arts and crafts, enjoy coffee, ice cream, and snacks, or pick up everyday necessities during their stay.
Open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (excluding select holidays), Hale Aloha is a convenient stop for guests exploring Kalani and the scenic Puna coastline. Whether you’re checking in, looking for information about upcoming events and activities, or simply enjoying a leisurely drive along the Red Road, we invite you to stop in and experience a taste of rural Hawaiʻi.

The grounds and cottages are breathtaking, not to mention we were lucky enough to have a view of the ocean! … Close to shops and markets, food and drinks weren’t a problem for us to obtain. There is a black sand beach in walking distance – it really doesn’t get much better! This is a place for adventurers and outdoor lovers, if you want room service & nightlife, stay in Kona. But if you want a unique once-in-a-lifetime experience, this is where you should be.”

You’ve got a farmers market every Saturday, grocery store only 10 min away and also a convenience store right at the property. And our favorite- black sand beach. Only 5 min drive away. They have plenty of things going on at the retreat center , like sound healing, yoga , gardening classes – we loved them all. People who work here are the best. Sweet and helpful. 100% recommend. Everybody I interacted with was very friendly. It really feels like I’m far from civilization but I still have all the creature comforts I desire. “Great cottage, private, on a beautiful lush part of the island near the ocean. Loved the surrounding foliage and the fact that you can really open up the cottage to the outdoors to feel immersed in nature. The retreat itself feels quiet and secluded, though there’s lots to explore in the surrounding area as well. Wish we could have taken advantage of the classes here but as we only stayed for one night, we will have to come back! Also, the person working at the little gift shop/store in the morning was super friendly and an impressive guitarist :)”

“If you would like a charming, unique, and rustic yet comfortable stay in a gorgeous area of the island with friendly locals, look no further. Yes, there are many open minded and friendly folks. I would say this place is LGBT friendly and open to all types. Just be nice and respectful. Visit Uncle Roberts down the road for breakfast, the market, or one of their Wednesday night shindigs. You can have some solid food and coffee offerings in the nearby town of Pahoa. And you are well situated to visit the area of Hilo and Volcanoes National Park. Bottom line: great value for the money at Kalani’s. Alternatively you could spend a lot more money at a kitschy and crowded chain hotel with zero personality in Kona area. If that’s your style, you might not enjoy Kalani. Otherwise, you’ll like it here. Go ahead and try it out!”

“I had an amazing time here! We requested a room with a bathtub and we not only got a HUGE bathtub, but the most amazing view we had during our entire trip. So many birds, geckos and wild (but not aggressive) pigs! I really felt like I was in the middle of a jungle while still being able to see and hear the surf crashing against the volcanic rock.”
