EDANCE

ECSTATIC DANCE

SUNDAY MORNINGS

Rise and shine with us every Sunday morning at the mothership of the dance that changed the world! Ecstatic Dance at Kalani created the template for this worldwide phenomenon of weekly community dances held as ritual dance experience. A beloved modern tradition that transformed our local community and the lives of thousands of dancers from around the globe.

Each Sunday opens with an invigorating yoga warm up led by Megan Yogini. Next we flow into the opening circle, and then a two and a half hour classic Ecstatic Dance, and then closing circle.

Our Sunday dances have long been the heartbeat of the Big Island dance scene; a rhythmic pulse of expression and connection. An outlet for the body, mind and spirit, the container is held to safely move through all levels of emotional release. Let’s dance our prayers together!

HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE & HULA SERIES

Our center is proud to partner with Hua ʻĀina and Kumu Leialoha Ilae-Kaleimamahu for these Hawaiian cultural class series, including Hula and Hawaiian Language, hosted on the lands of Ke’eke’e (where Kalani Retreat Center resides). These series each offer a unique opportunity to connect with Hawaiian culture and enrich your experience on the Hawaiian islands.

ROY DAHAN LIVE AT KALANI

Puna neighbor, singer-songwriter & piano composer Roy Dahan presents an evening of music, tunes & special guests.

Advanced registration required. Please register for free using the link below. Tickets have a suggested donation ranging from $15 – $35 per person.

Roy Dahan is a singer-songwriter, piano composer, and producer. His debut album, Some of This Life, was released in 2011 to critical and public praise. Two singles, “Does Anyone Know” and “State of Mind,” received wide radio airplay upon release. His other albums include The Man in My Head (2013), Through The Woods (2016), and Roy’s Piano Tunes (2023). Dahan has toured and performed across Europe and the U.S. His music has been described as “tough to explain but easy to love.” Dahan is now based in Puna, Hawaiʻi.

SUFI WHIRLING SPACE WORKSHOP with Anna Whirling & Dervish Aziz

MONDAY, JULY 27th, 2026
FROM 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM

Tickets from $35 – $55

Learn the practice of Sufi whirling, using body movements and chanting to open the heart. In this workshop we will be doing movement exercises and begin learning the practice of Sufi whirling. This is a physical practice that uses body movements and chanting to open the heart, and experience the Unity of Love in the human body. This workshop is open to all levels of experience. Come with an open heart, comfortable clothing, and socks.

*Aziz Abbatiello* was raised in an American Mevlevi family and has followed the Sufi path from an early age. He was initiated as a Semazen in 1996 and has participated in Sema ceremonies with Sufi communities throughout the United States and internationally. He is a member of the internationally renowned qawwali ensemble Fanna-Fi-Allah. Through music and whirling, Aziz is dedicated to preserving and sharing the living traditions of Sufism.

*Anna Whirling* is a Ukrainian-born Semazen, whirling artist, and teacher based in California. She has devoted more than 20 years to the art of whirling, embracing it as a path of spiritual practice, healing, and devotion. She teaches Sufi whirling and supports the Mevlevi tradition in the Bay Area through practice and community. Anna is the creator of Whirling for Peace, a performance dedicated to harmony, love, and unity.

Open Mic Night

FIRST TUESDAYS OF THE MONTH
HALE ALOHA LANAI
NEXT DATE: TBD
FROM 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Visit the Hale Aloha lanai the first Tuesday of every month from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm to experience the rich local artistry of Puna or offer your song, dance, comedy or other talent to the audience. This is event is free for all attendees from our surrounding community. The Hale Aloha shop will be open during this time and has a variety of drinks and snacks available for purchase while you enjoy the atmosphere and acts. We look forward to seeing you there and celebrating the arts with you!

This particular series of free classes have closed for now, though you’re welcome to learn more about these classes and access educational material by visiting kalani.com/grow-resilience.

This series was made available to the public every other Tuesday from April to September, 2023. Classes focused on topics such as growing your own food, the significance of native crops and canoe species, and methods for more sustainable living. These classes were free for all attendees and made possible through partnerships with Vibrant Hawai’i and other community organizations.
