Traditional Thai Massage developed out of Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, Yoga, and Buddhist Philosophies of Mindfulness and Loving Kindness and is said to be over 2,500 years old.

Michael Ceraso began his journey as a bodyworker through receiving a wide range of excellent bodywork.  After receiving reiki attunements and practicing for a year he traveled to Thailand where he studied Reflexology at Wat Po in Bangkok and Traditional Thai Massage at ITM in Chiang Mai.

Upon returning to Hawaii he continued to explore healing work through intensive studies of Cranial-Sacral Therapy and Polarity. These studies laid the foundation upon which he has added Swedish Massage and Barefoot Shiatsu.  In 2006 he spent another two months in Thailand where he studied with 3 different teachers, learning new techniques and deepening his practice. Currently he is completing a Masters program in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

He has been the Wellness Director at Kalani since 2004 and orchestrated the Kalani Bodywork Training Intensive for the last 9 years as well as teaching its Traditional Thai Massage course.

This course fulfills the State of Hawaii requirements for a general overview course in human anatomy, physiology and kinesiology. All body systems are covered, with special attention to those most relevant to massage therapy, the muscular, skeletal and nervous systems.

About the Facilitator(s)

Amy Doff Amy Doff has enjoyed teaching Human Anatomy, Physiology & Kinesiology to beginning massage students and allied health students, in numerous settings, for over 6 years. She hopes to influence her students to appreciate and take care of their bodies and their physical, social, political and energetic environments. Amy has been practicing medical massage/soft-tissue rehabilitation for the past 13 years and enjoys providing treatment work.

Amy is passionate about participating in our food system (from ground to grind and root to crown) and utilizing the opportunities we have as Massage Therapists to share self- awareness and health education with our clients. She promotes Wellness in Action (meeting our daily needs in ways that also nourish our physical, mental, spiritual and environmental health).

Amy has training in Massage Therapy (LMT, Hawaiian Islands School of Body Therapies, 2001), Anthropology (BA) & Occupational Safety & Health (Minor, UH Hilo, 2006) and a Master’s in Public Health, focusing on Health Policy and Management (UH Manoa, 2010). She currently serves on the Hawai‘i County Subarea Health Planning Council and collaborates with the Matungu Community Development Charity, a sister Community Based Organization, in rural western Kenya, to plan public health and community empowerment programs.

Lara is a teacher, choreographer and performer whose curiosity and deep love of music, movement and culture are the muses for her life work. Lara explores rhythm, spirit, craft and community to unlock movement potential and inspire the dancer in each person.

Lynne took her first yoga class while in college, at the YMCA in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Her first instructor and mentor, Trudy Davis, encouraged her to teach when she moved to Alaska in 1977.  She enrolled in the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco’s Teacher Training Program the summer of 1980. Encouraged by Donald Moyer, she attended her first yoga Intensive at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, India in 1981. She was certified to teach yoga by BKS Iyengar in 1984. Subsequent trips to Pune followed in 1988 and 1997.

Lynne founded the Inner Dance Yoga Studio in 1982 in Anchorage, Alaska and oversaw  its growth and development into a thriving center with 20 plus instructors for the next 26 years . She  started the Inner Dance Teacher Training program in 1999 which  trained over 100 yoga teachers in the 8 years of her  oversight of the program.   Lynne sold the Inner Dance Yoga Studio in 2008.   She now travels the country and the world teaching yoga wherever she is invited.

Lynne  draws inspiration from yoga on and off the mat,  attending local classes and  sharing practice with others .  She honors her  teachers of  the Iyengar  tradition, Judith Lasater, Donald Moyer,  and  Fr. Joe Pereira .   Self-Realizaion Fellowship, Paramahansa Yogananda's organization, to which she was first exposed in 1978 is another continuing source of upliftment.   

Yogananda says, "The true purpose of life is to realize one's Self as wisdom and bliss".   Patanjali's yoga sutra book II, sutra 41 (Light on Yoga Sutras, BKS Iyengar translation) states, " When the body is cleansed, the mind purified and the senses controlled, joyful awareness needed to realize the inner Self, also comes."  My mission statement is to help myself and others to awaken joyful awareness through the practices of yoga;   asanas that cleanse the body, pranayama that calms the mind, concentration that controls the senses, and meditation for realizing the Inner Self.

Lynne grew up in Wisconsin. Her love of travel and degree in Environmental Geology brought her to play and work in Alaska in 1975.  That year she met future husband, Jim , and together they made Alaska home. They have been married since 1978.  Together they enjoy camping, flying, overseas travel and their wonderful community of family and friends. Lynne also loves to sing, hula, play her ukelele,  garden, bike and hike. She is in the process of relocating to Prescott, Arizona.

Yoga and Rejuvenation for Aquatic Athletes

Yoga on the BeachKalani is renowned for yoga, drawing some of the biggest names in the industry to incredible studio spaces surrounded by the jungle and the ocean.  Join celebrated Kalani yoga and wellness teachers following IGLA, and explore elements of yoga and other forms of rejuvenation, all tailored to the aquatic athlete. We will combine studio yoga with yoga in and near the pool, including in our body temperature watsu pool.

Maxwell StarkhouseMaxwell is one of the most best-known yoga instructors at Kalani, and is a massage therapist, poet, musician, artist and world-traveling yogi. Maxwell was first introduced to yoga by his mother when he was a young child and has been interested in alternative medicine and healing arts ever since.

Maxwell brings a beautiful sense of fluidity to his yoga practice which beautifully compliments the needs of aquatic athletes. He has studied with different teachers around the world such as Kathy Elder, Shiva Rea, Lino Miele and Duncan Wong. He is influenced by many different styles of yoga and martial arts such as: hatha yoga, ashtanga yoga, yin yoga, vinyasa yoga, restorative yoga, capoiera, tai chi, and Kuk Sol Korean Buddhist martial arts. He recently spent five months traveling India deepening his practice of yoga.

Dennis Dehler

Dennis DehlerDennis agrees with Pattabhi Jois' statement in the movie Enlighten Up that the main goal of yoga is to discipline the mind. Dennis feels that Kundalini Yoga is one of the most effective, fun and quickest methods to practice the art of disciplining the mind.

His approach is gentle and focuses on opening up the energy centers in the body with Kundalini Yoga exercises. He has studied with Kundalini master Gurmukh and completed Yogi Bhajan's Kundalini Teacher Training. His classes are invigorating, grounding, intuitive, fun and leave you feeling centered, calm and smiling.

Kathy ElderKathy is a Certified Yoga Teacher and Master of Yoga Education, and has completed the 500 hour certification for the Yoga Alliance. She has been teaching the mind-body-breath union and the spiritual connection since the late 1970's. "Yoga shows us the way to develop a greater understanding of ourselves and to the world around us. Yoga makes everything better," Kathy says. Her life's experiences have led her on the path of a deep and committed yoga practice.

As the senior yoga teacher at Kalani, she has been devoting her time and energy to several yoga programs here. Hundreds of guests, volunteers and community members have attended her classes, and many have deepened their practice through her Yoga Teacher's Training Certification program.

Peter LavinaPeter's yoga practice and study started in 1990 at the Yoga Institute in Houston. His yogic journey took him to the Big Island of Hawaii in 1999 to continue his studies under Kathy Elder, where he graduated from Kalani's Yoga Teacher Training in 2001. In 2005 he took his level of study to a deeper level when he journeyed to Varanasi, India to study in an ashram with other yogis on the banks of the Ganges. In 2010, he opened the Ganga Ghat Yoga Studio in Ganges, Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, where he currently teaches Hatha and Kundalini classes. Peter believes the life science which is yoga has the ability to transform both the individual, and thus society. "Through the practice one unblocks the blockages that prevent an individual from achieving their ultimate human potential"...

About the Facilitator(s)

Lama MarutVenerable Sumati Marut (a.k.a. Brian K. Smith) is the son and grandson of Baptist ministers, a Ph.D. of Comparative Religions, motorcycle enthusiast, a former surfer, and a fully ordained Buddhist monk.  Lama Marut has been teaching religion for 25 years. As a Sanskrit scholar and Professor of Comparative Religions, he taught at Columbia University and the University of California, Riverside.  His unique background and easy, down-to-earth style has attracted thousands of followers around the world of all ages and walks of life who gather to hear his call for a revolution of true and lasting happiness.  A perfect combination of warmth and wit, Lama Marut makes even the most esoteric brain-busters of Eastern philosophy work as practical tools for immediate transformation.

Cindy LeeCindy Lee began studying Buddhism in 1997.  With Lama Marut she has completed the 18 Foundational and 18 Advanced courses in Buddhism offered by the Asian Classics Institute, and studied the full Classics of Yoga curriculum of Yoga Studies Institute.  She has completed numerous meditation retreats and now teaches Buddhism, meditation & yoga with Lama Marut in the USA and abroad.  She holds a Bachelor of Arts and also an Advanced Diploma in Electronic Design and Interactive Media and has taught in university film and media programs in Australia, as well as having worked internationally as a digital artist, film editor and VJ.

Darin McFadyenDarin McFadyen studies under Venerable Sumati Marut, and has completed the 18 Foundational and 18 Advanced courses in Tibetan Buddhism offered by Asian Classics Institute, Los Angeles. He has praticed yoga for 12 years, and received the 200 Hour training in Yoga Philosophy offered by the Yoga Studies Institute (www.yogastudiesinstitute.org).

He is also know internationally as music producer and touring DJ FreQ Nasty.   He has remixed and/or collaborated with artists as diverse as Kelis, Santigold, Fatboy Slim, KRS One, avant classical composer Steve Reich and reggae legend Jnr Delgado.  He draws from this experience to create his teachings on music, the arts, and Buddhism.   Hear his music at www.facebook.com/DjFreQNasty.

Claire ThompsonClaire Thompson has completed the 18 Foundational and 18 Advanced courses in Tibetan Buddhism offered by Asian Classics Institute (www.acidharma.org). She has received the 200-hour training in the Classics of Yoga through the Yoga Studies Institute, and was a founding teacher of the Mahasukha Yoga program at the Mahasukha Center in Los Angeles.  She has been a massage therapist for 12 years.
